Christian prophecy for the church and for the nations from a servant of God called to speak God’s word

Godfrey the godly giggler – a case of holy laughter

I remember a book I read back in 1989 called: ‘When the Spirit comes in Power’  by Christian psychiatrist John White. This book was written before the Toronto ‘Blessing’ hit the world in January 1994, although it should be noted that many of the Toronto/Brownsville even Argentinan Revival manifestations have been going around  the Christian fringes for years. They were not birthed with Rodney Howard Browne or Carlos Annacondia or Randy Clark or John Arnott. They are not a new thing.

John White mentions the holy laughter in his book and describes one man who experienced it called ‘Godfrey’. Whenever I think of holy laughter I remember this incident recalled in this book read eighteen years ago now (and not picked up since). I think this story demonstrates in part what is happening with many people when they laugh or shake, rattle and roll….I do not say this is all that is happening, neither do I say all shaking is wrong.

‘Godfrey the godly giggler’ recieved the holy laughter in 1985 at a John Wimber conference. He laughed for almost 36 hours intermittantly. He then went to every Wimber conference he could and frequently reported to John White: ‘I got the holy laughter again. It was terrific. I got it first then everybody else did. We were laughing like crazy.’  Says author John White in the book:

‘His (Godfrey’s) letters bothered me, for it grew steadily clearer that ‘getting the laughter’ and especially being the first person to get it had become a means of reassuring Godfrey of his personal worth. The Holy Spirit had elected him, as it were, to start the ball rolling. And this made it obvious to him that he was really important.

What was going on? Where did the Holy Spirit really come in? As I mentally reflected on the problem…I began to see that Godfrey’s godly-giggling subroutine was probably being triggered whenever he was in contact with the Spirit’s power and that he was only too happy to give expression to it because of his deep need for reassurance.

Soon after I was present at a conference … (of 1200)… where laughter occured….we were asked to stand together and wait in the Lord together in silence. (meditating Christs’ death).

A moment or two passed and someone began to laugh. The laughter spread. It did not seem … (fitting or condusive) …with the prevailing mood…Later someone told me, ‘Godfrey started it again.’

I would say that the trigger for this laughter etc on people like Godfrey need not be the ‘anointing’ or the Spirit’s power/presense at all (as John White claims), but is more likely other earthly triggers such as shouting ‘fire’, speaking in tongues, prompts from the front such as the suggestion the Spirit is there about to ‘move’, waving of the arms suggesting the flow in the room, words inciting to ‘catch it’, everyone else jerking around, music which is highly manipulative, or other mesmerismic techniques - anything that the person associates with the manifestations really – so it becomes a Pavlov’s dog type reaction happening time and again on a completely subconcious level and many folk are not aware this is what is happening or how they are being manipulated. In some cases, it could be demons causing what is happening too, though the psychological conditioning connection cannot be lost. I know some people who have been trying to rid themselves of Toronto manifestations and have found it very hard - they continue to manifest though they want no part of it and have renounced it and asked God to deliver them – and though deliverance from counterfeit spirits may be needed, perhaps they are not yet free from the manifestations because they have not realised this psychological part and after confession and deliverance they need healing and restoration and unconditioning of the mind/psyche. How does one heal one who has been subliminally brainwashed to this degree without even realising it? It is hard. God alone knows! Just as well we have Him to pray to to restore us!

  1. I find it quite disconcerting that upon meditation on Jesus’ torment and unimaginable suffering during the crucifixion, laughter would ensue in the guise of something holy. That seems to me, in and of itself, a manifestation of something irrationally quite the opposite. In addition, I’d like to add that my 14 year old daughter, stricken with a mood disorder this past summer, suffered a fit of uncontrollable laughter for more than 24 hours which rendered her totally physically exhausted and uncomfortable, and for which she required intensivee treatment with psychotropic prescription drugs in a psychiatric treatment facility. At the time she was undergoing tremendous emotional stress, and I was told by the treating psychiatrist that this is a form of emotional hysteria, sometimes triggered when a person’s emotional state is incited or escalates very quickly. I don’t propose to be an expert on psychiatric disorders or the Scriptures, for that matter, but I do know that the Bible teaches us to be reasonable and warns us of false prophets (2Ti 3:10-17). Thanks so much for your devotion to the truth; I am very encouraged by your website! :)

  2. Dear Miriam,
Several years ago I had an experience with laughter and after reading your post I feel a little “uncomfortable ” about it.
My husband, who had already listened to and excerpted a tape
from Derek Prince about “receive the gift of tongues” exhorted me to receive it. While listening I prayed to Jesus,if that be o.k., I want to.
Prince on the tape prayed for his audience to be filled and to respond in utterings.
When this prayer was finished, I started laughing. It was a laughter quite opposite to the above description and I was absolutely in control of it,( I stopped to see my husband)
I felt I was laughing in joy, joy to receive a gift from Jesus and I felt all bitterness and unforgiveness fall away from me. I felt “delivered from evil”, released from my personality ( I was always controlling myself and behaving unnaturally) .
After a quarter an hour I finished and told my experience to my husband. He enjoyed watching it but was envious because he had received neither tongues nor laughter.
A few weeks later in Isreal when among orthodox jews, I started to speak hebrew and I understood what it was about, Jesus from Nazareth, the Messiah, a new testament for Gods people … I do not speak hebrew and I never spoke again.
I know, this is a biblical tongue-speaking, but what about the laughter ?

  3. 1arabella: this sounds like a genuine laughter and also a genuine tongue. Not all laughter is bad or evil. Tell me more about this tongues experience when in Israel?

  4. When going down the stairs to the huge place in front of the western wall, amidst of jewish men, those with the black coats and fancy fur hat, I felt, I have to open my mouth and let my tongue whatever speak. In fact, I was shouting pretty loud and caught much attention. I can not remember word by word, but the essence of the speech was, that Jesus of Nazarene is the Messiah, proven by their books of Thora and Prophets. There is a new covenant for the house of Judah, now clearly to be seen because the blindness is being taken away.
I maybe said more, but, I was really too nervous while shouting this message, knowing that this kind of propagating a religion is criminal both to executive and orthodox jewish law. I was aware, I could have been stoned or handcuffed by the soldiers , there are many guards around.
But nothing of that sort happened. I was stared at, marvelled at, I felt, I was shining Jesus to them .Then the circle around me dissolved, everybody went on his ways, only I sank down on the bottom of the stairs and tried to understand .
I have a peculiar personal jewish background, and especially as a child, wanted always to convert to judaism.
in 2004, during the feast of tabernacles, I made another supernatural experiences with orthodox jews . Do not ask , but In a private meeting an old rabbi, was boldly told by me,that the spirit of God is in me, this rabbi who refused to shake hands with me because of his law not to touch a woman, asked permission to touch me and hugged me, he wanted to feel Jesus and he received .

I preach the gospej, when I feel the spirit wants me to do and I seem to have more boldness and power when adressing jewish people.

  5. Ok, so are you saying then as you spoke the tongue you knew as you were speaking it what you was saying at very the same time? Was it confirmed/were you told by anyone else that what you thought you were saying was as thought and it was actually Hebrew if so?

  6. I know some hebrew and know how it sounds. While speaking I was aware of what language and what message I was speaking, it was in my mind in german. My husband was at my side and called the speach sounding “holy” and kind of awesome.
    Why do you ask?

  8. At another occasion I spoke to a couple of Mongolia, me not knowing which language and not exactly knowing what it was about. The lady told me later, it was in her mothertongue and something privat for her husband.

  9. My husband reminded me of some “jerusalem syndrome” it happens to pious pilgrims, when the come to Israel the first time , they believe, they were biblical figures and mostly end up at the neurology department of Hadassah hospital.

  10. God bless you 1arabella. I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit 37 years ago as a young man away from home in the Military. I was filled with joy and spoke in toungues, various unknown languages, for about 20 minutes straight. The Holy Spirit is alive and well and Jesus wishes to bestow on us many blessings and gifts that unfortunately most christians don’t have the desire or faith to pursue. The Bible is very clear when it states, “earnestly desire spiritual gifts” but many are afraid to seek or want to rationalize away anything not compatible with their own comfort zones and experiences. Tongues, personal prophetic words and other gifts are available to those who hunger for more from their Savior. I too have experienced holy laughter at times in my life and it is a wonderful experience of deep joy and freedom in the Holy Spirit. Don’t be discouraged by naysayers and find Spirit filled believers who share your experience to fellowship with. God is pouring out His Spirit on all who are ready to believe and receive something new in their lives.
