Christian prophecy for the church and for the nations from a servant of God called to speak God’s word

Faith, counting on God by Holding His Faithfulness

THERE are commonly three stages in work for God,”  said James Hudson Taylor (pioneering missionary to inland China): “first impossible, then difficult, then done.”

“We believe… that the time has come for doing more fully what the Master commanded us; and by His grace we intend to do it – not to try, for we see no scriptural authority for trying. “Try” is a word constantly on the lips of unbelievers. “We must do what we can,” they say, and too often the same attitude is taken up by the child of God. In our experience, to try has usually meant to fail. The Lord’s word in reference to His various commands is not “Do your best,” but “Do it”; that is, do the thing commanded. We are therefore making arrangements for commencing work in each of these nine, provinces-without haste, for ” he that believeth shall not make haste,” but also without unnecessary delay…. “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat of the good of the land.” “Whatsoever He saith unto you, do it.”

Hudson Taylor had a new conception of the scope and meaning of faith, upon which a flood of light had been thrown by a passage in his Greek Testament . ..  A letter in 1870 showed that he had already-made the discovery which was to be a mine of wealth through all his later life. It was just in his usual reading that he was struck with the words, “Ekete pistin Theou.”  How strangely new they seemed!  “Have (or hold) the faithfulness of God“: surely it was a passage he had never seen before? Turning to the corresponding words in English he read (Mark 2:22): “Have faith in God.” Ah, that was familiar enough; and something within him whispered, ’the old difficulty!’ How gladly would he have and increase in faith in God, if only he knew how! But this seemed entirely different. It laid the emphasis on another side of the matter in a way he found surprisingly helpful. It was not “have” in your own heart and mind, however you can get it, “faith in God” but simply “hold fast, count upon His faithfulness”; and different indeed he saw the one to be from the other.  As to the correctness of this modified translation, Mr. Taylor noted For the rendering God’s faithfulness,’ see Rom. 3: 3, where ‘the faith of God evidently, means His faithfulness. The verb translated ‘hold,’ is thus rendered in Matt. 21: 26, ‘all hold John as a prophet.’ In the corresponding passage in Mark 11:32, it is rendered ‘ count’; and in that in Luke 20: 6, a different Greek verb is used, which well illustrates the meaning, ‘They be persuaded that John was a prophet.’ Let us see that in theory we hold that God is faithful; that in daily life we count upon it ; and that at all times and under all circumstances we are fully persuaded of this blessed truth.”. Not my faith but God’s faithfulness-what a rest it was.

He wrote “Want of trust is at the root of almost all our sins and all our weaknesses; and how shall we escape it but by looking to Him and observing His faithfulness? … The man who holds God’s faithfulness will not be foolhardy or reckless, but he will be ready for every emergency. The man who holds God’s faithfulness will dare to obey Him, however impolitic it may appear. Abraham held God’s faithfulness and offered up Isaac, “accounting that God was able to raise him from the dead.” Moses held God’s faithfulness and led the millions of Israel into the waste, howling wilderness. Joshua knew Israel well, and was ignorant neither of the fortifications of the Canaanites nor of their martial prowess, but he held God’s faithfulness and led Israel across the Jordan. . . . The Apostles held God’s faithfulness, and were not daunted by the hatred of the Jews or the hostility of the heathen…. ” And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell “of those who, holding God’s faithfulness, had faith, and by it “subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained. promises … out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens?”

“Satan, too, has his creed: Doubt God’s Faithfulness. “Hath God said? Are you not mistaken as to His commands? He could not really mean just that. You take an extreme view, give too literal a meaning to the words:” . . . How constantly, and, alas, how successfully are such arguments used to prevent whole-hearted trust in God, whole-hearted consecration to God! … How many estimate difficulties in the, light of their own resources, and thus attempt little and often fail in the little they attempt! All God’s giants have been weak men, who did great things for God because they reckoned on His being with them….

“Oh! beloved friends, if there is a living God, faithful and true, let us hold His faithfulness. . . . Holding His faithfulness, we may go into every province of China. Holding His faithfulness, we may face with calm and sober but confident assurance of victory every difficulty and danger; we may count on grace for the work, on pecuniary aid, on needful facilities, and on ultimate success. Let us not give Him a partial trust, but daily, hourly serve Him, counting on His faithfulness.”

  3. Powerful truth! Absolutely essential to continue on in victory and I need to be reminded of it regularly.

Isn’t Our Lord something, that He would put 100% of the faith burden on His shoulders! Not only is He the Author but the Perfector of our faith. We get to rest, trust, and rejoice that we don’t have to prove anything, or hide anything or fear anything. Abba Father’s faithfulness is our comfort and guide and strength. Whoo-hoo!

“For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Ph. 1:6

Blessings for your many encouragements and guidance dear sister in Christ.

  5. Let us demonstrate in the face of horrible evil that is violent and brutal in its nature, that God can be trusted and “Great is His faithfulness”.

    THE CROSS

Why was Jesus tortured so? Didn’t the law simply demand ‘death’ as the wages of sin? Why such a torture and why such pain? Why permit such suffering? We know that God’s wrath is poured out against sin so why wasn’t the lamb tortured?

When we go back in Scripture we see God calling for a lamb to be slain and its blood put on the door of the house where believers lived. Then when He instituted the sanctuary services, at the very center was a little lamb slain. This slain lamb was at the very center of Israel’s worship and reconciliation with God through forgiveness of sins. But we NEVER find the lamb tortured. It was killed as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

So, if the lamb in the OT symbolized the Lamb of God, Jesus, why wasn’t Jesus killed quickly and as painlessly as possible? Why wasn’t Jesus simply slashed with a knife? Wouldn’t that have sufficed to pay for sins? Why did the Father allow such brutality?

We can only understand the reason for the torture when we step back from the cross and realize more was going on at the cross and a death for sins. As important and as crucial as that is for you and me and all who want to be forgiven and live forever, there was something else going on at the cross.

Colossians 2:15 “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them at the cross.”

We find in this verse the mention of a ‘public spectacle’ of the principalities and powers. What was it that God exposed about evil? What else was going on at the cross that was important to God? What is this public spectacle Paul writes about?

Let’s remember that Lucifer accused God of holding back, of keeping secrets and most importantly of not being able to be trusted. We see the nature of his slander in Eden when he told Adam and Eve that they could not trust God. This lie was responsible for the fall of many angels and God had to answer these charges but how?

From eternity past God had a plan if His love was ever challenged and evil entered in. Now it was time to put it into effect. He would leave His throne as the Word of God and lay aside His form. He would take on the form of a creature and become a human being in order to save Adam and Eve and their descendents. To show His love He would become one of them and die in their place.

This taking of a new form would not be temporary. This form would be permanent! The Word would take on a new form and remain a human for all of eternity future!

So when the fullness of time came, The Word “took on flesh and dwelt among us”, John 1:14.

Also Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Getting back to the cross we see that God was doing more than saving sinners…..He was also making a demonstration, first of the true nature and character of evil and also of the true nature and character of His great great love for His creatures, angels and mankind.

Now once we see the cross as a ‘public spectacle’ and ‘demonstration of the true nature and character of both evil and love we can understand why Jesus was tortured as He was.

A DEMONSTRATION OF THE TRUE NATURE OF EVIL

Jesus clearly foretold to His disciples that He would as a Good Shepherd lay down His life for the sheep. He said it five times in John 10. Then on His way to Jerusalem He kept telling them that the Son of Man would put Himself into the hands of evil men. This happened in Gethsemane, but not after Jesus had prepared Himself for His trials and tortures by praying until He was strengthened from above.

As soon as they took Him they bound Him. All night long they hit Him and spit on Him. Then they whipped Him with a whip full of bone and metal ripping the flesh. They pressed thorns into his head and then nailed Him on wood to hang in agony until He died.

This horrible torture was a demonstration, a public spectacle of Satan his evil nature.
He first entered Judas to betray Him.
He was in those who tried him.
He was in those who beat Him and whipped Him.
He was in those who mocked him and pressed thorns into His head.
He was in those who nailed him to a tree and in those who stood by mocking Him.

In all of this the true nature of evil was clearly demonstrated and put on display as a public spectacle. Jesus was without sin and was absolutely innocent. The devil had nothing on Christ and this torture completely unwarranted.

Satan of course was putting the human nature of Christ under tremendous pressure to use His divine powers to heal His own pain and deliver Himself from the torture. Jesus was under tremendous temptation to call for 12 legions of angels to save Him. This is why he was tortured so. Satan didn’t want to see sinners saved and Jesus replace Him as Ruler of this Earth. Satan knew that if Jesus was allowed to render a perfect sacrifice as the Law required of the lamb slain, then it was over for him.

THE DEMONSTRATION OF THE TRUE NATURE OF LOVE

The cross was more than a demonstration of the true nature and character of evil and Satan. It was also a demonstration of God’s love that proved without a doubt that He can be absolutely trusted.

John wrote: “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” 1 John 3:1

What is the MANNER of love the Father has bestowed upon us? This “manner of love” was a sacrificial love! What is the greatest kind or manner of love anyone can show? Isn’t it sacrificial love? What greater love could anyone show than a sacrifice that involves death? And how much greater is that love when it involved such torture and suffering?

Here is the way Paul put it:

“For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:7,8

Our God and Father demonstrated for all time that He loves His creatures so much that He was willing to sacrifice His form AND allow Himself to be despised and rejected and led as a Lamb to the slaughter and torture.

“So His visage was marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men… I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.” – Isa. 52:14; 50:6.

“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief.” -Isaiah 53:10

How did it please God to allow His Son to be brutalized and killed the way He was? It can only be because God wanted to demonstrate the true nature and character of evil and at the same time demonstrate His great great love that can be absolutely trusted.

Beholding this sacrificial love of our Father and His Son we are astonished and amazed. We sing with the angels who know this ‘manner of love’ better than us since they know His glory. With them we sing, “Glory to God in the highest.”

9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“ You are worthy to take the scroll,
    And to open its seals;
    For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
    10 And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice:

“ Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

“ Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped Him who lives forever and ever.” -Revelation 5

So let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise and worship with thanksgiving. As long as we have breath, let us praise the Lord!

And let us allow this God full of sacrificial love, willing to do anything it takes for the creatures He loves, to live in us. Let us offer up our bodies as ‘living sacrifices’ that He might live in us which is “our reasonable service”. Let us continue to demonstrate to sinners how much He loves them and how much He can be trusted. Let us walk in the Spirit and the Light so the dark, violent, hateful nature of sin and evil can be exposed and again made a public spectacle as we love not our lives unto the death to the glory of God.

May we desire to know nothing but “Christ and Him crucified”.

“God forbid we glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” -Galatians 6:14
