  1. Thank you for posting this thought from Jim Elliot. His widow–Elizabeth is one of my favorite writers. She wrote about Amy Carmichael, a missionary to India, as well as writing about Jim (and their courtship, etc.) We need more like her today.
    Sincerely,
    Teri

Can you send me an email and we can correspond that way?

    If not, I will understand.

  4. sorry i should probably elaborate on the context it was quoted to me in as i cant seem to see the relevance.

A friend of mine wanted a relationship with me i told him i thought it was better that we stay friends. after a few days he contacted me giving the impression that he then no longer wanted to be friends and quoted Jim Elliots quote to me ????

  5. Karen: the quote is echoing the scripture ‘For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul’ (Mark 8:36) where Jesus is talking about the things of this life – what good are all these in the grand scheme of things if you end up in hell? There are more important things to consider than these things ALONE. So stop chasing these things, and instead chase the kingdom of God. Material things will then be provided but do not make them your sole focus.

Jim Elliot knew this, and was prepared to give his life for eternal causes. He could not lose his blessing in eternity, that was certain if he remained in Christ, but the things of this world are but temporal, easily lost, so it was not foolish to consider them as much less important in the grand scheme.

As for your friend, it is very hard to have a close platonic relationship between singles of opposite sexes (especially for men) as almost always one secretly hankers after the other, and so he is not being cruel to you by cutting ties, more like he is being very sensible. Do not take it personally, do not be hurt. Insisting he stays your friend will cause him continual hurt and is not being fair on him. I think your friend is quoting this out of context and may be saying that as he cannot have you in the way he wants (to ‘keep’), it is better you guys do not hang out as ‘just friends’ as what’s the point, it will lead only to frustration for him. Let him go to find someone he ‘cannot lose’ (in the sense that he means it) that will return his affection.
