Watchman Nee on Holy Laughter
“A great number of people desire to have joy in their feeling. The so-called holy laugh is an extreme case in point. It is taught that if a person is filled with the Holy Spirit he invariably will have this holy laugh. He who claims to have this kind of laughing cannot control himself. Without any reason he will laugh and laugh and laugh as if infected by a certain disease, and will appear to be partially insane.”
Once in a certain meeting, after the sermon was concluded, it was announced that everybody should seek for this holy laugh. All began to beat tables or chairs, jumping and leaping all around, until not long afterwards this so-called holy laughing came. People would merely look at one another and break out laughing. The more they thought about it the funnier it became. And so they could not contain themselves and kept on laughing. What is this? Can this possibly be the fullness of the Holy Spirit? Can this be His work? No, this is plainly one of the works of the soul.”
Watchman Nee, The Latent Power of the Soul (1932).

Thank the Lord that obtaining this kind of laugh is not a prerequisite nor proof of salvation. Good excerpt & thanks!
we;ll.this website generally stimulates one thing: alot of agitation, wasted hours on the net, when believers who love Jesus, should be about the Father’s business , not spending days and nites like scavengers, looking for Christian gossip, new slander, and fault finding, as a hobby. get on with the work of the kingdom please.save souls, who dont even look or have time for sites like this. in eternity this will all be wood hay and stubble stuff…
Deb
You know you only say this because you disgree with my conclusions. If I posted an article saying ‘holy laughter’ or x minister or ministry is great, then you’d have loved it.
And what are you doing blogging if you don’t think it’s the work of the kingdom and we should not be ‘wasting’ time here? How much evangelism have you done lately? (And don’t you know revealing false teachers and their theology with fake quasi salvation theory and a fake gospel, is saving some souls from hell, just as much as evangelism to unchurched ‘pagans’ on the street anyway? For God’s sake, the church needs saved first before the lost!)
hahahahaha! it’s a waste of time to blog so I’m here reading this article and spending the time doing wood, hay, and stubble stuff like responding to this blog- time away from the really eternal things. Deb, you are funny.
That is a classic response to protect false teaching.
Thank goodness that little boy finally spoke out and said
‘The Emperor has NO clothes’
I know that is not scriptual BUT Deb it would takes me as long to write down ALL the scriptures telling us to do so, that would mean you would have to spend much more time
reading it.
Hey Mary, did I detect a little “holy laughter” at the beginning of your comment?? Just kidding. But Deb’s response is absolutely classic. If one person is snatched from the fire of false teaching…well you know.
Paula – it is amazing you used that expression as God spoke to me about that this morning using that EXACT analogy about some signs and wonders etc before I had even read or moderated your comment. So thanks, great timing, an extra bit of confirmation that what I heard was right
I will type up the visions as soon as I have enough time.
Cheryl, ooops you caught me in the spirit.
Miriam, Hey, what can I say. He must have dropped it into our spirits at the same time. Hmmmm
God is sooo faithful – let HIM direct your path and HE will direct you around things that are coming up that are NOT of HIM. Let not your heart be troubled about such things – He doesn’t want us to be involved in false spirituality.
This site is a dissapointment and is exactly the problem with the church. If you are so couragious as to discount a prophet because of one mistake…. you must hold yourself to a flawless mirror and have very few intimate friends.. The truth is that no man is without error. Exactly the need for grace.. You think the prophets of the Bible were without error? Yeah right. Holy laughter/speaking in tongues/healing/ and all the other DOCUMENTED things God is doing in our world are proof of what Jesus was talking about when it came to the greater things we would accomplish. Miriam.. you are excellant at judging, pointing a finger, and slandering. kudos to you!
Thanks for the postings which I read with interest. I’ll like to mention Dr. Derek Prince’s booklet – Uproar in the Church, in which the author mentioned that he was frequently asked about the so called Holy Laughter phenomenon. He recounted that it was through this experience that he was saved.
It’s interesting that Watchman Nee wrote this in 1932. The only time I’d ever heard of Holy Laughter was associated with Toronto. People who are against Toronto have used arguments that it had never been seen in christian revival contexts before.
Alias:
First of, this is not talking about it happening in a ‘revival’, it is talking about church meetings.
Also not all people against Toronto write that holy laughter is a new thing – they write that it is not biblical – big difference. In fact, many, like me, point out that holy laughter and the other weird manifestations associated with Toronto have happened many times for hundreds of years – and exclusively were linked to cults, sects and people being led off far astray from the Bible.
Hi Stan
Derek Prince was reading his Bible because he had been “confronted .. with the claims of Christ”. After struggling for some time to pray he became aware of a presence and found himself saying “Unless you bless me, I will not let you go” (Gen 32:26. He started to sob deeply and after about half an hour the sobbing changed to laughter. After this he was a completely changed person who then saturated himself in God’s word. He was saved because he encountered Jesus Christ.
In the book you refer to he says
“When Christians move out of the realm of the truly spiritual and descend to the earthly, it is then all too easy to move from that to the soulish, and from the soulish to the demonic. Experiences or manifestations which were initially spiritual become an open door for the activity of demons. All too often, however, Christians do not realise that they have passed from the realm of the spiritual through the soulish to the demonic.
Here is one example. Exuberant, hilarious joy can be a precious work of the Holy Spirit. God is delighted when His people delight themselves in Him (2 Cor 9:7). But sometimes Christians can take their eyes off the Lord and begin to focus on their own subjective experiences. Their goal becomes their own personal enjoyment and their worship becomes a form of entertainment. In the end, true joy is replaced by frivolity and flippancy.
…Another way that the soulish nature expresses itself is in putting human leaders in a place that is reserved for Jesus alone. It is right to express gratitude and appreciation to human ministers who have helped us but never to offer them a kind of soulish adulation that borders of idolatry.
…Another danger that threatens those who minister in the supernatural realm is the temptation to use spiritual gifts to manipulate or exploit or dominate people.
…I believe the Lord gave me the following definition: Witchcraft is the attempt to control people and get them to do what you want by the use of any spirit that is not the Holy Spirit…..And if anyone has a spirit that he can use, it is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God and no-one uses God.
…Christians sometimes interpret some form of supernatural manifestation they have received as a badge of special spirituality. They tend to see themselves as being on a higher spiritual level than others who have not received a similar experience.
…Speaking of a certain kind of wisdom found among Christians James says:
This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly (on the earthly plane), sensual (soulish), demonic. (James 3:15)
…If this move is of God what types of fruit should we look for?
1. The Fruit of Repentance (Mark 1:15, Luke 13:3-5, Luke 24:47)
2. Respect for Scripture (John 10:35, Isaiah 66:2) Every kind of spiritual manifestation must be tested by this standard: Is it in harmony with Scripture: If so, we can receive it. If not, we must reject it.
3. Exaltation of Jesus (John 16:13-14) As soon as human personalities are allowed to take the centre of the stage, the Holy Spirit beginns to withdraw…Then we need to notice that Jesus is careful to emphasise that the Holy Spirit is not an “it” but a “He”. When people begin to explain spiritual experience in terms of getting “it, it can easily happen that they get the wrong “it”.
4. Love for our Fellow Christians (John 13:35)
5. Loving concern for the Unreached (John 4:35)
It seems to me that there is a very big difference between the sort of laughter that Derek Prince describes which happened to him privately,& which turned his life around (I have seen this happen when people have been baptized in the Holy Spirit for the first time), and the deranged cackling that goes on in these Toronto/Lakeland meetings. To what end and purpose may I ask? And why night after night? Why?
I know I am probably considered an apostate, but so be it. I do not support any “doctrine” in the sense that by definition, doctrine is false. In essence, one could say that doctrine is a lie agreed upon and serve no other purpose than to lead people away from the truth, albeit in the name of truth.
Doctrine is also a “definition” in that it defines or explains something. The fact is, the second you define something, you lose it. In the words of Laozi (Lao Tse), “The Dao that can be named is not the eternal Dao.” And before you assume that that is just a quotation from a Godless relgion, consider this:
The Chinese Bible, used by the house churches all over China, translate the opening lines of the Gospel of John like this:
“In the beginning was the Dao, and the Dao was with God and the Dao was God.”
Fascinating, isn’t it?
As to Holy Laughter, I have seen films of it but never had the experience. As I result, I neither support it nor reject it as I have no base to judge from.
I don’t mean to be testy here…it’s just I don’t believe any of us have the wisdom to judge others in these matters. All we have to fall back on is to argue that our position is supported by “doctrine,” which is just that, doctrine.
I too have been sad at times and depressed and the Spirit has spoken to me in those times and told me to wait upon the Lord and he will renew my strength. My sorrow at that time was turned to joy and I did start laughing and couldn’t stop and didn’t want to. It felt so good, like a weight had been lifted off me. The laughter was so unexpected and I was at home when it happened. I have been in prayer and it has happened. God will make you laugh sometimes and nothing outwardly that you see or hear someone say or do had anything to do with it. It was simply God turning sadness into joy or just reminding me that He will never leave nor forsake me. It makes you happy and should make you laugh instead of having a mean sour defeated look on your face.
Laughter is medicine for the heart. We should do it more often. Especially when we think of all the things God has done for us. How he has delivered and protected us time and time again. How her has made a way when we couldn’t see a way out of a situation. When we didn’t know how we were going to pay a bill, or buy food, gas, pay housenote and God has stepped in many times. That alone should make us throw our hands up and laugh. I’m laughing now at how amazing and wonderful God really is. Laugh everybody, it’s hearty medicine because God is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo WONDERFUL ok I gotta go cause I’m about to start shouting now
There certainly is something to be said about the fact that too many people do nothing but criticize others for what others are doing and what others believe. We are to love each other and to build up others in the body (and that “can” certainly come in the form of correction). But may we speak the truth in love, may we pray for those who we believe are going astray, may we look in the mirror 10 times as many times as often as we critique others, may our lives be filled the fruit of the Spirit and with the love of Christ. I see the need for correction of doctrine and false teaching, I really do, but many have become hateful and critical as they “only” do this. I want to know the difference between a truth and a lie, but I can learn this from the Word. I also want people to seek to correct the ministries of others, but we must be very careful and prayerful when doing this, lest we believe just a different lie and our hearts become hardened against any truth and all ministries. I have said for many years that if you go to church or read an article on theology, and you believe “EVERYTHING” that was said or written, you were simply not paying attention to the degree that you should (or the information was very basic, which is okay at times too). I don’t believe there is a “DOCTRINE” of laughing in the Bible, and I do not believe it should be preached as a doctrine. But I have been at the alter seeking God when I felt the presence God come over me; His goodness, love, reality, kindness came all over me and all I could do was to laugh do to the joy of this particular revelation. I can’t and won’t answer for other, but I believe that what I experienced was from God; I gave Him the glory. He was made more real to me! Telling me a famous preacher or great theologian does not believe in this does not impress me one way or the other. Thanks for reading. God Bless!
The Bible doesn’t mention saving people from car accidents either but don’t we believe it happens? God is larger than the His Word. All that He allows and all that the Holy Spirit does is much larger than our theology. He won’t go against His Word, but He will go against our understanding of it. However, I’m so thankful all of you have complete understand and our able to judge all. I hope our Lord doesn’t return unless he consults you.
Norman,
First of all, your comparison is entirely invalid. It’s a typical argument used by people who wish to avoid holding up our experiences to the light of the Word. I once had a Pastor tell me that if we had to judge whether or not something was of God from the Word then no one could ever be healed of aids, since we can’t find that in the bible. These sorts of analogies are ridiculous. Cars didn’t exist in bible days, nor did aids. But we have no trouble finding God’s protection and His healing power in the bible. The exact example may not be there, but the pattern was more than adequately demonstrated.
Secondly, I don’t think Mr. Nee nor anybody else that has pointed out the less than holy nature of this so-called holy laughter would argue that laughter can never come from God. What he was pointing out was that this seeking and working up of laughter to claim an experience from God was purely carnal or “soulish” in nature. Personally, I would be inclined to believe that while it is mostly the flesh, sometimes it does in fact involve a spirit, though not the Holy Spirit. Saying that this is not of God, is not just a simple matter of saying there is no example exactly like this spoken of in scripture but rather that it does in fact go against the nature of the Holy Spirit which is revealed to us through scripture. I have been in meetings were this so called holy laughter took over the service. And I say “took over the service” because that is exactly what happens. You are left with ministers who cannot share the Word of God and people who attempt to testify to the goodness of God but are unable to speak for laughing. Aside from the fact that it contradicts one of the fruit of the Spirit, being self-control, what do you suppose this accomplishes? Why would the Holy Spirit wish to stifle any testimony of Jesus? You don’t have to devote a lot of thought to this to see the problem with it. We are not talking about what happens in your private devotional time with God, but in a public meeting, which we are instructed in the bible is to be conducted in an orderly manner.
Finally, your sarcastic remark about people having complete understanding and the Lord needing to consult them before he returns is entirely baseless. Nobody on this blog has ever claimed to have complete understanding. The author being quoted here I suppose does have perfect understanding now, having long ago died and gone to be with the Lord. But certainly during his lifetime he did not boast perfect understanding. Having read a little of his work, I think I can safely say he operated in a spirit of humility and did in fact possess a great deal of understanding in many areas that could be of great benefit to much of the modern church if they weren’t too busy with their “new revelations” to handle some real truth.
Amen to Cindy!
I pray and sing in tongues, and there are many times my mouth would be filled with laughter. I have seen many answers to prayer and breakthrough in delays; it is amazing. It is not put on and I don’t manipulate it. The Word says the Lord will laugh at His enemies. It also tells us that He will fight our battles and our enemies are His enemies, so He laughs through us on this earth.
His victory in heaven is enforced on the earth, as we co-operate with Him. Amos 3:3 asks how two could walk together unless they are agreed. Psalm 116:5 states the earth was given to man, and the Lord told us to pray (communicate or ask) specifically that the Lord’s will be done in the earth.
Look, if any believer wants to laugh, whoop or holler, let em do it unto the LORD A W A Y from the meeting, in private, out in the bush somewhere : THEN it truly is FOR HIS EYES / EARS ONLY , and not an attention seeking exercise.
Meetings are for edification, not self indulgence.
Good ol pentecostal celebrating and shouting doesn’t offend God, may offend the Baptists though. But God is offended by things worked up in the flesh : a la Rodney H Browne’s laughing revival.
>> The Word says the Lord will laugh at His enemies. It also tells us that He will fight our battles and our enemies are His enemies, so He laughs through us on this earth.
donG, those statements sound improper and unscriptural.
In presuming the laughter you have is God laughing at his enemies THROUGH YOU, is to indirectly cause you to PERCEIVE YOURSELF AS GOD.
This is exactly the mindset Satan took on, so in effect you have been seduced to PRACTICE THE MINDSET OF SATAN.
There are only 2 options for that:
1. Eventually be CAST DOWN by God for pride and misrepresenting him.
2. REPENT of and CEASE the improper laughing manifestation.
>> His victory in heaven is enforced on the earth, as we co-operate with Him.
This is the foundation of the heresy that “God cannot move unless we co-operate with him”.
It is tampering with God’s sovereignty.
He knows things that we don’t, and aren’t permitted to know.
SEEKING of unauthorised information is divination and sorcery.
“His victory in heaven is enforced on the earth, as we co-operate with Him” CREATES THE BELIEF “we enforce his victory on earth”.
This places YOU in the seat of INITIATIVE and CONTROL and usurps God’s sovereignty.
Again, this is what Satan believed, so you are just lining yourself up with him again.
Remember, Satan is a cunning deceiver and seducer, and the definition of deception is NOT KNOWING you are deceived.
Once the deception is pointed out, and you CONTINUE in it, then you go from “deceived” to “DEFIANT REBELLION”.
Defiant rebellion is the attitude Satan intends for all people, because it means they will be joining him in the eternal lake of fire.
Ezekiel 28:12-17 ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “‘You were the model of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz and emerald, chrysolite, onyx and jasper, sapphire, turquoise and beryl. Your settings and mountings were made of gold; on the day you were created they were prepared. You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for so I ordained you. You were on the holy mount of God; you walked among the fiery stones. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you. Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, O guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I THREW YOU TO THE EARTH; I made a spectacle of you before kings.
Luke 10:18 “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Leviticus 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have FAMILIAR SPIRITS, and after WIZARDS, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.
2 Thes 2:9-10 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing.
1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Rev 20:10 And the devil, who DECEIVED THEM, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Rev 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
Being TOTALLY RESISTANT to any teachings or manifestations that appeal to PRIDE is the safety from DANGER.
donG, I hope this is helpful.
At one time I participated in Toronto “Blessing” and had my family in a church amongst it with all the madness: euphoric feeling and visions, confused thinking, vibrating, twitching, groaning, shrieking, roaring, gibberish speech and sound effects, animal acts – dogs, snakes chickens, lions, pigs, etc., staggering about, falling over, uncontrollable/irrational laughter, etc.
One of the members who operated in the spirit of it later committed adultery and subsequently murdered herself by hanging from a rope.
1 Tim 6:11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
I understand where you are coming from…I was in the Worldwide Church of God for 25 years. We had our ideas and doctrines that we could “prove” with the Word. And then I was set free. I had to come to the realizaton that God was God and as a mere mortal, He was more awesome and bigger than I could ever imagine and He didn’t like being in the box of theology that I had placed Him in.
I had to face the fact that He Himself, thru His Son, came and frustrated the religious people of His day.
There has got to be more to God than what has been taught in the “institutions” of relgion.
While I was searching for God I saw and heard things that I had never seen or heard before. And each time I prayed, God, if this is not of you close the door and protect me! But, God if this is You, I want more! I now speak in tongues, I have been pressed by the Holy Spirit to lay down and feel His presence and I have laughed. I still ask God to protect me from the enemy if this is not of Him. I can only believe that since all of these things continue to happen, that my God is a good God and He has only allowed me to experience what is from Him.
You speak of holy laughter as being of the flesh, well, if you just found out that your flesh was saved from the fires of hell and you were going to spend eternity with God………wouldn’t that be something to rejoice and laugh about??? Being set free from addictions, set free from disease, being set free from sin……..that’s something to be glad about! Do you laugh when your favorite team wins the super bowl? Do you laugh when you see your children or grandchildren play at your feet? How much more then our Father in Heaven understands when He has shown up and does what He does best that we should rejoice and be ecstatically glad in praise??? Set free from the bonds of religiousity!!! A merry heart brings healing! Let it out, let it all out! Total abandonment in His presence!!
You speak about many religious leaders….God uses imperfect vessels. That’s all He has to work with since none of us is perfect. Anytime there is a move of the Holy Spirit there is a counter attack by the enemy. If you aren’t doing anything for God that causes the enemy to attack you, you aren’t doing anything for God. The sad thing in America today is that the Holy Spirit isn’t even invited to show up….it’s business as usual. The sadder thing is that Satan doesn’t show up, either, because church isn’t a threat to him. We think that by being in our Sunday best and singing 3 songs, blessing the offering plate with a few dollars, listening to a milk toast message, praying and shaking hands on the way out the door to the closest buffet is good enough.
God is not looking for cookie cutter people with agendas, church bullitens and special holiday programs. He is looking for people who are willing to lay down their lives and follow Him. To to heal the sick, raise the dead, set the captives free! To preach the gospel of love and grace (not sloppy agape and greasy grace). To preach Him crucified and raised again for our sin and salvation.
And as far as a thus sayeth the Lord about your judgement of all of these people…..the word of the Lord comes to edify, encourage and comfort the body of Christ. Just because you don’t understand or participate in what you see others doing doesn’t mean it’s not of God. There have been many healings, signs, miracles and wonders done in the name of Jesus and you can’t argue with someone who has had an experience compared to a teaching. I’ll continue to pray that God protects me from the enemy and I’ll pray the same thing for you, too.
Charlene – In THE “TORONTO” CONTROVERSY – DISTURBING NEW FACTS FROM HISTORY, Andrew Strom made the following comments: .
Alarmingly, there are also many exact similarities between the `Toronto’ experience and the demonic manifestations found throughout the New Age movement and also in many pagan religions.
A number of Indian gurus, such as Bagwhan Shree Rajneesh and Ra-makrishna, have had the power to transfer a state of rapturous bliss to their followers merely by touching them. In the case of Ramakrishna, these states were often accompanied by uncontrollable laughter or weeping. Swami Baba Muktananda also had this power, according to a former devotee, and the resulting `Kundalini’ manifestations included uncontrollable laughing, roaring, barking, crying, shaking, etc. Some of his followers also became mute or unconscious, while many felt themselves infused with feelings of tremendous joy, peace and love.
All such experiences have been based on “yielding” oneself to the power working through these gurus. Is it any coincidence that the manifestations associated with these demonic `Kundalini’ cults are almost identical to those of Toronto? Could it be that the same `spirits’ are at work?
When Yan Xin, a Chinese `Qigong’ spiritual Master, gave a talk to a crowd in San Francisco in 1991, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that many in the crowd began to experience what Yan called “spontaneous movements”. He
told his audience, “Those who are sensitive might start having some strong physical sensations – or start laughing or crying. Don’t worry. This is quite normal.” Likewise, the demonic “ministry” of renowned eighteenth-century occultic healer Franz Mesmer, was also known to produce many similar manifestations (falling down, jerking, convulsions, strange grunts and cries, hysterical
laughter, etc). http://crash.ihug.co.nz/~revival/toronto.html
To me a sign of demon possession is in people like Heidi Bakker and their uncontrollable jerking that is very sickly! God is not a jerk and he doesn’t make people jerk!
You are not advocating that we all become like Heidi Bakker because it is an experience even if we don’t know it’s origin?
See the photos from Oct./Nov. from this Christian, Norwegian newspaper, “Dagen Magazined”, and you can see Heidi in her jerking mode! http://www.dagenmagazinet.no/LydBilde/Bildeserier/tabid/264/AlbumID/56874-42/language/nb-NO/Default.aspx

I’ve seen your posts on various blogs and really enjoy them. Do you have or plan to have your own blog or website?
Thanks for all you do trying to “snatch them out of the fire”.

I am reading a newer edition, of “The Normal Christian Life” by Watchman Nee. It’s a reprint, that also includes his classic, “Sit Walk Stand”. I tried to read TNCL back in the 70s but it seemed dry and theological, and I soon lost interest. I was more into reading Mel Tari, or Charles and Francis Hunter, or that book “Praise God for Everything” (can’t remember the author).
Now, as I read TNCL/SWS, I find it permeated with the Spirit of God, revelatory, and I see what I missed all those years. I am motivated to restudy Romans. I thank God for what both Paul and Nee, were moved to write and share.
Referring to the book of Acts. There is nothing mentioning about Holy Laughter. Most Charismatic churches use the word, laugh, that is found in the Old Testament to support the practice of Holy Laughter. However, bear in mind the word, laugh, is mentioned in the Old Testament instead of the phrase, Holy Laughter. As the phrase, Holy Laughter, is not mentioned in the Book of Acts, there is no justifiable ground to support that this practice is directed from the Holy Spirit.
The Scripture warns us not to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. For instance, if the Holy Laughter is not the work of Holy Spirit at yet we grieve the Holy Spirit by announcing that it is the work of Holy Spirit, we turn up to blaspheme the Holy Spirit. According to Jesus, the sin that involves in blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgivable.
just like the satanic “slaying in the spirit”. That is NOT God. It is the devil.
Isaiah
51:21Therefore hear now this, you afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine.”
Jonathan
You are correct. Do you know what else is pretty close if not blaspheme of the Holy Spirit? When a true Christian performs miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit and other christians say its “of the devil”. Now days in the age we live in, the age where most christians are skeptics, people question every miracle done by the hands of man. Some Christians have a hard time understanding that God still uses human vessels like you and I to accomplish what HE wants on Earth. Whether it be starting a business, miracles, salvation, and deliverance. Many times the “supernatural” in Christianity is shunned and we’re told to be cautious because we may be decieved. So to deny any work of the Holy Spirit and give that credit to satan is pretty darn close to blasphemy.
Jonathan,
I think you are right that the reverse is also true. Therefore we need to be careful and check against God’s word and not carelessly and presumptiously declare any experience is the work of Holy Spirit. That’s why we need to be like the Bereans and not gullibly swallow every word preached or freely embrace any kind of experiences.David Wilkerson has warned us about the weird things happening in charismatic churches including prosperity teachings and this ‘holy laughter’.
Accusations of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is often a demon’s way of using spiritual extortion to shut people up, who have accurate discernment. According to the Bible, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is defined by Jesus as attributing His miraculous works to the devil. I know from personal experience that holy laughter really isn’t holy. It is the first stage of Kundalini yoga. Making animal sounds is the 2nd stage. Acting like an animal is the 3rd stage. If you go all the way to the 7th stage, you will think you are a god.
Happy-God. Sad-Devil. Easy really. Give me the happy anytime!
I went back online and listened to a teaching from a church I used to attend. The associate pastor mentioned that he asked his dad, the pastor, how he could just sit there and let people be so completely out of order with yelling, screaming, laughing, running during a service. His father said, I just close my eyes. I left because there was no steady and reliable leadership in the church. I used to experience this laughter and found myself wanting to be free of it. If it were of the Holy Spirit, why would a person want to be free of it? I like what I heard another Pastor said when someone did that in his church, he said he went up to them and told them to stop, they were looking stupid. I wish someone had taken time to do that to me, I would not have gotten to the point of suicide before discovering God’s truly amazing grace, but would have found it because God’s kindness would have led me to repentance.
Theology or no theology, if it brings people into bondage, it is not God.
I just found this site. I must say from what I have read it is very refreshing to find a prophecy site that HAS DECERNMENT, the conviction to defend the faith and to speak against what is false. Too many people are buying into any sign and wonder that comes along i.e. Lakeland! If you speak against it in any way you are judging, not in love, not open to the miraculous. We need to speak the truth and have righteous judgment. At the same time we need to hear from the one true God who guides and leads us into all truth.
discernment that is – oops
Jesus Heals,
Attributing presumptiously things and experiences that are not of God to God is also equally a blasphemy. We are exhorted to be watchful and sober least we be deceived and devoured by the stalking lion. What better way to defend ourselves than being like the Bereans.

While I would agree with the statement that “slaying in the spirit” is NOT of God, I think it’s taking things too far to say it is the devil. That is giving the devil far too much credit.
Mostly the falling down is a response of the flesh. The people fall because they expect to do so and it usually only happens when a catcher stands behind them. No catcher-no falling. There is mostly no outside influence (apart from a push from the person praying for them).
No demonic involvement. No credit to the devil for something he hasn’t done.
Of course there CAN be exceptions – and maybe some could be demonic. But they would be the RARE exceptions.
And on the otherhand scripture DOES describe instances where people fell when they encountered God. But this was a human reaction to an extraordinary experience of God. It was not a common thing and God did not knock them down. To the contrary, they were often told to get up again and in one case (Ezekeiel from memory) we are told the Spirit LIFTED HIM UP.
“The people fall because they expect to do so and it usually only happens when a catcher stands behind them. No catcher-no falling. There is mostly no outside influence (apart from a push from the person praying for them).
No demonic involvement. No credit to the devil for something he hasn’t done.”
=============================
I have seen people thrown across the platform w/o anyone touching them.
I have seen a whole room of people spinning around in a circle with their eyes closed, and not bump – for 1/2 hour.
I have seen people writhe on the floor like snakes, and roll w/o doing a thing to facilitate such action.
I have seen young children totally overcome by something that terrorized them – called “the power of God.”
“Flesh”?
I have seen hundreds of people totally drunk and fall out of pews. People who opposed any such thing.
The unseen world is not without physical power.
ps use your real name
re Watchman Nee – I was in an evangelistic band and our preacher was always quoting him to our often unsaved audience, which did not sit well in my heart. I thought Nee was spooky and I was right.
He got all his “theology” fron 4 different women teachers – contrary to God’s word, and this opened him up to false spirits.
He was a shepherding movement hero.
http://www.apologeticsindex.org/n01.html
ie: Nee says, “Words alone cannot be considered God’s Word.”
Subjective – not objective – experience was his rule.
No wonder he spent most of his life in jail and died there.

I agree. Thats why I agreed with Jonathan about what he said about holy laughter. I would say that the third wave folks, the ones that seek signs and wonders, (John Crowder, Benjamin Dunn, NAR) are operating under decieving spirits. The other 90% of false doctrine is neither from God or the devil. But rather from their (flesh) own desires. Paul said “Us apostles are not like the rest of the hucksters preaching for personal profit.” If you are truly born again and read your Bible its impossible to be decieved. Why? Because like Debra said we can discern what is evil, what is from God, and what is from the flesh. Another way is because Jesus said My sheep know my voice. If you feel the Holy Spirit speaking to you about a message or certain preacher to watch out for them you better put your guard up. He is our Counselor and He leads us into all TRUTH. He is our Helper. Would a loving Helper and counselor lead you into deception? Absolutely not. I’m a pentecostal and I’ll be the first to admit that their are some charismatic preachers with some flaws and even deceivers. But that doesn’t make them all false prophets either. I stick to people that I feel based on the Word of God and the Holy Spirits discernement. People like Jentzen Franklin, Joseph Prince, Smith Wigglesworth, Jimmy Swaggart, and Gregory Dickow and some others. I’m sure you could find some flaws in some of these men but you can’t deny that their message is based on truth and the NEW COVENANT. I say the new covenant because their are alot of preachers who confuse and try to mix and mingle the old testament with the new. And in reality their is a MAJOR differnce between the two. In the old testament God spoke to certain individuals, in the new testament He speaks to ALL people who are born again. In the old testament God resided in the Holy of Holies, in the new testament God, through the Holy Spirit resides in US. In the old testament everyone relied on the law to save them, in the new testament Christians no longer need the law because the law is fulfilled through Christ. Only sinners need the Law to show them how sinful they are. There are many many preachers today preaching the Law to christians but is that really biblical? Didn’t Paul say the law wasn’t for Christians? So why preach on the law? It doesn’t make sense, UNLESS the message is to the unsaved. The law leads to death, Life in the spirit leads to Life. The whole message of the New testament is based on two facts. One, faith in Christ leads to salvation. And two, Christ in you. Just about every single book that Paul wrote in the Bible he tells people about the resurrection power within him and them.
“Christ in me the hope of Glory”
“We are the temple of the Holy Spirit”
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ in me lives”
“I and my Father will live in them”
…and many many more that I can’t think of right now.
Remember Paul got mad at the Hebrews for preaching the foundational doctrines of the church over and over. They were still babes in Christ who could not handle the meat of the Word. The milk of the word is basic doctrines of the church quoted below. The meat of the word is understanding, knowing, and fully mature in all the new testament not just the basic foundations. The meat of the Word is fully acknowledging that Christ in you is the only way to true victory. We can do nothing without Him because “In him we move and breathe and have our being.”
(Hebrews 6:1-3). Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
The message of the New Testament and the power to victory is simply:
Christ in you. Living in us, abiding in us, and making His home in us. God made man for communion, and through Christ, He still communes with us, and not just through His written Word.
“And on the otherhand scripture DOES describe instances where people fell when they encountered God.”
Note that they all fell forward onto their faces in reverent fear, their total unworthiness and depravity exposed to their own hearts in the presence of the Holy God.
And none were laughing, flopping like fish on their backs, or imitating animals or sexual orgasm…thin line between the flesh acting out and demons dishonoring God through His creatures.
Of course there CAN be exceptions – and maybe some could be demonic. But they would be the RARE exceptions.
Onesimus – Many in TACF who were slain ended with a jerking demonic spirit called Kundalini just like Pastor Steve Long! So to say it’s a RARE exception is a far stretch of faith?
But it’s safe to state that the jerking in Toronto, Brownsville or any other revival place is not a sign of the Holy Spirit but of a Kundalini demon which infiltrated Christianity mainly in North America through Rodney Howard Browne! See http://www.newchristian.org.uk/kundalini.html

I have seen young children totally overcome by something that terrorized them – called “the power of God.”
“Flesh”?
I have seen hundreds of people totally drunk and fall out of pews. People who opposed any such thing.
The unseen world is not without physical power.
ps use your real name

Lawrence,
You may have seen such thing.
I have also seen countless cases where people in a prayer line fell backwards supposedly “slain in the Spirit” into the arms of a catcher. THAT is the most common “manifestation” in most Pentecostal/Charismatic churches and meetings I’ve attended.
THAT is a response of the flesh as I described earlier.
I also did not discount the fact that demonic influence is at work on occasions. However, from my experience in everyday churches (as distinct from those who court the “megastar revivalist preachers”) it is more often the flesh that is the cause of people falling.
And what good would it do if I used my “real name”? You still wouldn’t know who I was.
At one time I DID post under my real name but found I was being confused with others with a similar name, so I have now posted under the name “Onesimus” for over five years and THAT is what most people know me by. Does it make any difference at all if I don’t identify myself as Tim?

That’s amazing, we actually agree about something.

Susan what you have described is not the common experience known as “slain in the Spirit”. THAT was the experience that I was commenting about. Your description may fit some of the popular “revival” sites and their offshoots, but not necessarily your everyday Pentecostal church.
Toronto “Blessing” spirit channelling
=====================================
Toronto “blessing” was attractive to many church leaders as a supernatural power they could USE.
They became spiritual drug dealers, and many people got “hooked”.
Attempting to command, wave, and prod the Holy Spirit or Jesus INTO PEOPLE is gross misbehaviour against God.
He will not be commanded by men or be indulged like a prostitute for drunken frolicks.
The phenomena isn’t a blessing from God.
It is an INFILTRATION OF OCCULT POWER from the same source as Hindu “Shaktipat”. Google “Shaktipat”.
Toronto “Blessing” is WIZARDRY and MAGIC ARTS from familiar spirits (demons):
Lev 20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have FAMILIAR SPIRITS, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people. (KJV)
Rev 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice MAGIC ARTS, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
Toronto “Blessing” definitely didn’t come from the creator God, as he never imparts manifestations similar to mental illness or drunken / drugged, as that is a contradiction of a sound mind and self control which he has REPEATEDLY endorsed in the Bible.
The Bible repeatedly asserts DRUNKENNESS as IMMORAL.
The Bible does not endorse a righteous version of drunkenness, just as there is no righteous version of stealing, adultery or lying.
Rom 13:12-14 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us CAST OFF the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. let us WALK PROPERLY, as in the day, NOT IN REVELRY AND DRUNKENNESS, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
On the Day of Pentecost Christian disciples preached the gospel in various languages which impressed listeners who comprehended the message in their own language. (Acts 2:1-47)
However MOCKERS accused the disciples of being drunk for speaking authentic languages the disciples normally didn’t know.
The FALSE ACCUSATION OF MOCKERS should not be used to justify spiritual or physical drunkenness.
2 Cor 4:4 The GOD OF THIS AGE has BLINDED THE MINDS OF UNBELIEVERS, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Spiritual drunkenness blinds the minds of BELIEVERS!
The Bible encourages us to TEST THE SPIRITS, and that should include USING YOUR MIND to ANALYSE the outcomes (manifestations) in conjunction with seeking what the Bible says about it.
This is what a RENEWED MIND is for.
1 John 4:1 … test the spirits to see whether they are from God…
Romans 12:2 …be transformed by the RENEWING OF YOUR MIND. Then you will BE ABLE TO TEST and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Being discerning includes being CAUTIOUS.
“The fear of the Lord” includes being cautious.
God recommends this to protect us from harm.
2 Cor 11:14-15 Satan himself MASQUERADES as an ANGEL OF LIGHT. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
Rev 20:10 And the devil, who DECEIVED THEM, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Playing around with counterfeit “angels of light” (familiar spirits) might be BLISS and ECSTASY now, but if not repented of will lead to REJECTION by the Most High God FOREVER.
The “big party” will occur in heaven AFTER WE DIE, not now (Rev 19:9).
Scripture asserts we now have SERIOUS WORK to do while remaining firmly SOBER.
2 Tim 4:5 …. KEEP YOUR HEAD in all situations, endure hardship, DO THE WORK of an evangelist, discharge ALL THE DUTIES of your ministry.
“Keep your head” means NOT getting drunk.
Luke 12:45-46 … suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and GET DRUNK.
The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will CUT HIM TO PIECES AND ASSIGN HIM A PLACE WITH THE UNBELIEVERS.
“eat and drink and GET DRUNK” in that passage probably means self indulgence and spiritual foolishness while neglecting what God wants doing.
Toronto “Blessing” produces manifestations such as mental euphoria, body vibrations, twitching, slurred speech, gibberish speech and sound effects, animal acts – dogs, chickens, lions, snakes, etc., staggering about, falling over, and having uncontrollable/irrational laughter.
These are manifestations of the god of CHAOS – Lucifer.
People who participate are unwittingly practicing MOCKERY of the Bible, mockery of God the Father, mockery of Jesus Christ and mockery of the Holy Spirit.
Participators who come to this realisation should repent and DELIBERATELY AVOID any recurrences. They should also warn others, as it will be disastrous on judgement day for people who persisted in spiritually fornicating with Satan’s minions “familiar spirits”.
I was previously deceived about Toronto “Blessing” in a church I attended.
I tolerated it due to experiences I had at a Christian training school about 4 years prior, as well as not comparing it sufficiently against Bible counsel.
PRIDE could make a person unwilling to face the possibility they have been deceived, and then to remove themselves from the convenience of continuing in fellowship with others who indulge in false ministry.
It is God himself who gives DIVISIVE COUNSEL:
Rev 18:4-5 “COME OUT OF HER, MY PEOPLE, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues.”
Will people heed God’s warning?
Sadly, MANY WON’T because they are either in love with a false christ or have insufficient “fear of the Lord”:
Prov 14:26-27 He who FEARS THE LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.
Toronto “Blessing” type phenomena have been called “new wine”.
It is actually spiritual adultery, and therefore MADDENING WINE:
Rev 18:3 the nations have drunk the MADDENING WINE of her ADULTERIES.
At the height of a Toronto “Blessing” era I experienced in the mid 1990’s, the church services were a MADHOUSE OF MANIFESTATIONS.
They used to have evenings where cushions were put all over the floor for all the FALLING OVER that went on.
Churches are falling over!
Phenomena like Toronto “Blessing” push people towards mental illness, such as BIPOLAR DISORDER, through giving them tremendous euphoric “high’s”, (supposedly a “blessing” from God), then they come crashing down into UNBEARABLE depression when the “high” wears off.
This causes them to seek more of the “high” and become FAMILIAR SPIRIT DRUG ADDICTS.
Mental illness and demon influence are sometimes different names for the same thing.
1 Tim 6:11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
SEEK a snake, get a snake. KNOCK on the Devil’s door, get welcomed in.
=======================================================
Leviticus 19:31 Regard not THEM THAT HAVE FAMILIAR SPIRITS, neither seek after WIZARDS, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
The Bible forbids spirit channeling.
The Holy Spirit cannot be “channeled” into people, because he NEVER takes orders from men.
The Holy Spirit is strictly a servant of God the father to fulfil God’s agenda, not men’s.
Anyone who tries to address the Holy Spirit DIRECTLY is acting improperly.
Notice how all the false teachers address the “Holy Spirit” directly (Benny Hinn, etc.).
Well it won’t be the Holy Spirit, as he doesn’t take orders from men.
If people attempt to CONTROL the Holy Spirit by CHANNELING him into people, then “familiar spirits” (demons masquerading as friendly) may turn up to cooperate with improper intentions and practices.
Also, if people seek confirmation about something that the Bible has ALREADY SPECIFIED AS WRONG, then LYING SPIRITS may turn up to ENCOURAGE their willingness to be deceived.
For example, people seeking confirmation about involvement in fornication, adultery, homosexuality.
This is how lying spirits and occult power have come into Christian churches.
People have ASKED FOR THEM TO COME IN by following unbiblical practices and seeking unbiblical counsel.
Matthew 7:7-11 “ASK and it will be given to you; SEEK and you will find; KNOCK and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a SNAKE? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
If you ASK for a snake, then you may get a snake! If you KNOCK on the Devil’s door, he may welcome you in!
If you ask to be tickled (given pleasurable sensations), then ONLY the Devil will comply, because the Bible NEVER encourages us to ask God for pleasurable sensations:
Rom 13:14 make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
Some people seek spiritual ticklings for entertainment, or relief from their depression, just like the use of drugs and alcohol.
People should READ THE BIBLE to know the full counsel of God, then TAKE CARE what they ask for, what doors they knock on, and what they receive from others.
John 16:13-15 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
If anyone wants to be filled with the Holy Spirit, then they should simply READ THE BIBLE a lot, seek to UNDERSTAND IT, then follow its counsel, because the Holy Spirit is the AUTHOR OF THE BIBLE through guiding its contributing writers.
The Holy Spirit will assist good biblical interpretation if people GENUINELY SEEK good interpretation.
If people want to be deceived, then THEY WILL BE DECEIVED.
Know your own motives.
If you love the truth, then you should also be involved in challenging falsehood.
2 Thes 2:9-12 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of COUNTERFEIT miracles, signs and wonders, and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because THEY REFUSED TO LOVE THE TRUTH and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful DELUSION so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
UNHOLY spirits are ready and willing to TICKLE and TEACH the gullible, the ignorant, and those with impure motives. Especially church leaders with ambitions for money and control, often hiding this behind “building God’s kingdom”.
Christian church leaders have been practicing or condoning Kundalini SPIRIT CHANNELING, resulting in all the manifestations of mental illness or drunken/drugged.
These activities are turning churches into Satanic covens because they are MOCKERIES AND BLASPHEMIES against God.
It is not good for church leaders to be encouraging or condoning this.
Any leader who has practiced these ways should make a PUBLIC REPENTANCE and turn away from pride, sorcery, and service to a false Christ.
Then start ministry afresh serving the TRUE Jesus Christ.
This kind of radical repentance and change is the true fulfillment of God’s grace:
Isaiah 55:6 Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
