J I Packer leaves Anglican Church Plagued by ‘Poisonous Liberalism’

Prominent theologian J.I. Packer recently left the Anglican Church of Canada, citing the church’s reluctance to stop blessing same-sex unions as part of his reason.

Prominent theologian James Innell Packer of St. John’s Shaughnessy Anglican Church in Vancouver, B.C. reluctantly left the Anglican Church of Canada last week, reported the Vancouver Sun

Educated at Oxford, Packer apparently agonized over the decision and said part of his reasoning for leaving was his belief that some Anglican bishops in Canada are “arguably heretical” for adhering to “poisonous liberalism.”

Packer also specifically pointed out his desire to no longer serve under Vancouver-area Bishop Michael Ingham, who has done little to stop blessing ceremonies for same-sex couples,

“He is a bishop who appears heretical,” said Packer, according to the Sun

The “Calvinist Anglican” and famous author of Knowing God,  which has sold more than a million copies since its 1973 release, said he, along with 10 other British Columbia-based Anglican clergy, would now submit to the authority of an Anglican archbishop in South America.

  1. So he is still anglican but seeking his authority form another part of the same church. The church that is still in communion with those he calls heretics. Interesting.

  2. All the liberals I know were kind people. I don’t know any that are poisonous. However, seeing as we are interested in new things, I’d be interested in seeing a “poisonous” kind of liberal. That would be quite nice. My favorite part of the post was that he wasn’t specific on what was so poisonous about liberalism. I guess we were supposed to think that being liberal itself was a bad thing just like in the past, it would discredit someone to accuse them of harboring cooties.

  4. it’s not about political liberalism, it’s about theological liberalism.

  5. I’m glad to see a prominent Anglican theologian express his disapproval of the same-sex blessing. I hope this news gets around to the rest of the Anglican churches in Canada. I left the Anglican church many years ago shortly after being born again. The Lord showed me that the problem with the Anglican church stems from its roots-a denomination started by King Henry Vlll, not for spiritual reasons, but for his own goals.

  6. Thanks Susan, as I agree with you and if Packer left the church ‘because’ they’re going “against” God’s Word, then that’s alright with me.
I don’t care what anyone says, “It’s about the Word of God” and that’s it. Mankind is drifting further and further ‘away’ from God and Jesus just like the Bible said they would, but ‘man in his so-called wisdom’ thinks he knows “more” than the God who made Him.
I’ll be praying for Packer and all the others who’ve decided to ‘follow’ God and Jesus and ‘not’ the doings of man. May They direct his and their paths as well.

I guess the real question is at what point one becomes ‘born again’.

  8. JIPacker is one of the few who left who would do such a thing. Most are too self center and worrying about where they would preach next or their salaries.

The time is here now when we see a big differance between the wheat and the tares.

  9. I assume that you are referring to ECUSA. In the UK we don’t have salaries worth worrying about. Most CofE Priests gave up large salaries to become priests and earn very little. I know that ECUSA pay for their priests out of their own parishes and it can be a ‘bit more’ lucrative.
