Zondervan faces $60M federal lawsuit over Bible, homosexuality

Signs of the times:-

News Article By Tony Tagliavia, July 9th 2008, from here

“GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Christian publisher Zondervan is facing a $60 million federal lawsuit filed by a man who claims he and other homosexuals have suffered based on what the suit claims is a misinterpretation of the Bible.

But a company spokeswoman says Zondervan doesn’t translate the Bible or own the copyright for any of the translations. Instead, she said in a statement, the company relies on the “scholarly judgment of credible translation committees.”

That is to say, setting aside whether the federal civil rights lawsuit is credible, the company says Bradley Fowler sued the wrong group.

His suit centers on one passage in scripture — 1 Corinthians 6:9 — and how it reads in Bibles published by Zondervan.

Fowler says Zondervan Bibles published in 1982 and 1987 use the word homosexuals among a list of those who are “wicked” or “unrighteous” and won’t inherit the kingdom of heaven.

Fowler says his family’s pastor used that Zondervan Bible, and because of it his family considered him a sinner and he suffered.

Now he is asking for an apology and $60 million.

“To compensate for the past 20 years of emotional duress and mental instability,” Fowler told 24 Hour News 8 in a phone interview.

He claims the company is misinterpreting the Bible by specifically using the word homosexuals. Fowler admits that every Bible printed is a translation, interpreted in some way, but he says specifically using that word is not a translation but a change.

“These are opinions based on the publishers,” he said. “And they are being embedded in the religious structure as a way of life.”

Fowler says he came across the discrepancy while researching a book. He says Zondervan Bibles published in the 1980s use the word homosexuals in the Corinthian passage in question, but earlier and later ones don’t.

24 Hour News 8 went to a library to do some research of our own, and found Zondervan Bibles published both in the 80s and post-2000 use the word homosexuals in the passage.

Some translations, like the New American Standard, use the word. Others don’t.

The (regular) American Standard version uses the phrase “abusers of themselves with men.” The King James says “abusers of themselves with mankind.” Still others, like the New American Bible, use the word “sodomites.”

Fowler says the idea that those phrases are another way of saying homosexuals is a misinterpretation as well.

The Zondervan statement says the company never alters the text of translations it is licensed to publish.

24 Hour News 8 contacted a law professor and several biblical scholars for comment but they have not returned our calls.”

  1. In the passage in 1 Corinthians 6:9 the word translated ‘homosexuals’ is from the Greek word Arsenokoites and from Strong’s:

    - one who lies with a male as with a female, sodomite, homosexual

  2. Criminalization of Christianity ~

Persecution to a greater extent in the U.S. is just around the corner – just as Jesus said in Matthew 24:9, which so many for so long have wanted to attribute to the apostles only.
We thus far, in the United States ~especially, have a ‘cheap Grace’ Gospel.

As much as we would like to pass this article and similar writings off to ‘fanaticism’ – it is in all actuality prophecy coming to pass.

  3. Wow. I am almost speechless. This kind of takes the cake, doesn’t it? Next, it’s going to be the whole Holy Bible. That’s why I try to read everyday and pray that the LORD writes HIS words upon my heart — printed copies of the Holy Bible may become scarce in the future.

I am also a bit curious — I have a copy of the New King James Version and I believe the terms ‘homosexuals’ and ’sodomites’ are used in the same passage at the center of this lawsuit.

Also, wasn’t Paul referring to men who have sex with boys (or men?)…and isn’t that still homosexuality?

Leave it up to men and the only thing we’d read in the Bible is ‘GOD is love.’ No one seems to care why the LORD is love or how we show HIM our love for HIS mercies.

  6. This just all lines up with the prophecies. We will come to a point soon were praching the Word of God as it relates to homosexuality will result in jail time for the preacher. That will seperate the true from the false leaders. The book “The Marketing of Evil” has a great chapter on the rise of the homosexual agenda, how it runs the school boards for your children although none of them can reproduce, how gays went from being shunned in your grandparents day to be openingly (and often forced to) celebrated thier perversion. It will be as in the days of Lot Matt:24…those days are here! HOLD ON TIGHT!

    cheers

  7. I have a little paper backed Bible in my office, NKJ, put out by Nelson that reads the same. I think he should sue God for being very clear about His expections of us is. Stop the sin and repent and than seek His face and He will embrace you. He loves you too, He just wants all of us to do what His word tells us to do. Simple. Marge

  10. On my birthday my husband gave me a Jimmy Swaggart expositers’ Bible. Now before everyone starts yelling “gross! gross!” let me say this has blessed me so very much. Jimmy Swaggart after his fall into sin, received the message of the Cross greater than he had before he fell. The message of the Cross is all through this bible with his comments on repentence, the Cross and false teachers. So far, I have not been able to find any comments I disagree with. But I want the truth. If Swaggart has it, I will listen to him. And yet, he too is not above any other man…if I find him preaching heresy I would speak it out. I am so blessed by this particular Bible I would recomend it to anyone. I find him to be a brother who has greatly repented and has been restored and speaks the truth.

  11. I read somewhere that the NKJ has some ritual thing going on with the way is was written, or maybe it was another bible.

  12. Leidi,

I too have a Zondervan Bible — the NIV Study Bible and I use it as my primary Bible. It’s not perfect as no translation is. One glaring problem is that Lucifer is referenced as ‘morning star’ in Isaiah 14:12 which is another term used for Jesus elsewhere.

It’s best to have at least two Bibles and check between them. Better yet is to go look at original Greek and Hebrew words to gain a better understanding. One does not have to be a Hebrew or Greek scholar to do this. Here are two sites that have what’s called an ‘interlinear bible’ which translates into the original language:

  13. Craig and Leidi

The real issue is not so much the book publisher or printer, Zondervan, but the translation – the NIV does have issues but so do many others. I suggest keep the NIV you have (unless you are made of money) and when you need to study in depth go online and look up the Greek and Hebrew.

  15. so who won this lawsuit?

    Comment by Alex | December 4, 2008

  16. Hey Craig,

The glaring problem in your NIV version should be reason enough to dump the version. Only Jesus is the morning star and nobody else. What are you waiting for? there are about 40 odd verses which are changed in order to reduce christ’s deity. What a glaring fault. How dare anybody take the place of Jesus – holy, pure and above all sin. no need of two or more versions. Just follow the 1611 KJV. Pray about this and god will give you wisdom to chose the correct one.
