Christian prophecy for the church and for the nations from a servant of God called to speak God's word

Todd Bentley, “How Much Do You Love Me?”

adoreme.jpgCartoon from here

“Do you love me…Do you really love me? are you sure? how much do you love me..? This is your opportunity to show me, ‘I love you Todd’..”

The above is a real verbatim quote from Todd Bentley during offering time at Lakeland.

  1. Pathetic!

  2. The worst thing is, it was like a deliberate bastardisation of what Christ asked Peter.

  3. This whole deal with Bentley and the Lakeland gang – has turned into bastardization of the human race.

  4. I think this guy is full of ego and a little crazy. He’s gonna be so rich after this.

  5. I believe much necessary correction is coming to this movement. Good!

  6. The quotation is taken out of context. In context, it does not parallel John 21, as alleged elsewhere. Moreover, in context, most of the occurrences of the word “me” refer to Todd’s pastor rather than Todd.

Here is my transcription of Todd’s remarks, from the June 23 Lakeland episode, beginning at about 22:19:24 EST:

And so I want to give everybody, and especially our guests and leaders, an opportunity to say, “Todd, we love you. We stand with you and here’s our offering.”

You know my pastor said to me one time. I went to this church. He said, “Todd, do you really love me?” I said, “I love you.” He said, “Todd, do you really love me?” I said, “I love you.” He goes, “How come you don’t bless us?” I said, “What do you mean?” He said,”You’ve been in our church, you know, all these months and you’ve never given us an offering and you call me your spiritual father.” And I said, “Really, I can’t just come and get blessed and . . . ? I . . . .You mean you want me to tithe?” I said, “What’s tithing?” I didn’t even know–we’re not asking for your tithe. But I didn’t even understand what tithing, let alone offerings, were. And he said, “I’ve been mentoring you for six months and I don’t think you’ve ever given one offering in the church.” He said, “That doesn’t mean I don’t love you and that doesn’t mean that you don’t love me. But if you really love me it’d be great if you could show me some support once in a while.” How many of you love what God’s doing? How many of you love what God’s doing? So how about “show me” tonight? We love–we’re behind you, Todd. We’re behind what God is doing. We want to bless you in the offering. You’re blessing the Kingdom. So can I have all my ushers come?

There is much to rightly criticize in this episode, such as Todd’s promise that audience members will receive impartation in proportion to their financial gifts. But it’s not necessary or appropriate to quote Todd out of context.

  7. Chairos Seeker – it was not used by me out of context as I have heard this directly referring to him, loving him, so coughing up money in the offering. It is very blatant. He has done this a lot more than one time without all the explanation bit here.

  8. Miriam, though I appreciate your work, I believe that your claim to have presented Todd’s “verbatim language” is incorrect. If I have mis-indentified the source of the quotation, I’d be pleased to re-consider my position and retract my counter-claim.

I do acknowledge that, unlike some other bloggers and to your credit, you have not attempted to tie Todd’s remarks to John 21.

BTW, did you notice Todd’s instruction that donors write the word “impartation” on checks submitted as part of the offering in question? Worth a look, I think. If that’s not simony, I’m unsure whether simony has ever existed.

  9. No I did not spot that. That is bad.

I watched a bit of Todd at Heritage on 08/08 and he said about loving him, and giving to him if we love him – I’ll do a post on it if I have time as he said some other awful things then re money – and also the emergence of manifest sons.

  10. Miriam, I haven’t yet been able to view the August 8 Morningstar event. But, if summaries offered by folks favorable to Lakeland are any indication, the MSoG teaching really came out of the closet. I’m trying to suck down a copy of the video and, when I watch it, will look out for “love me” references. Thanks for the heads up.

  11. You may be able to get it on the God TV website – I only caught about 15 minutes of it towards the end at offering time.

  12. Miriam, yes, it’s on the GodTV on-demand website, under “Healing Outpouring on Tour.” My goal is to download it to my hard drive, so that it can’t go away. But that’s hard to accomplish with Flash-based streams. The stream keeps hanging so that I get only a bit more than 2 hours of it–not enough to include the Bob Jones appearance, etc. I’ll try again tonight.

  13. Charios: Please let me know what they say about the Joseph Company as I did not hear that bit, just the final bit about Manifest Sons and then the manipulative offering.

  14. Miriam, will do. But I’m having trouble getting to the task. I have at least created a local copy of the video. Whew!
