Christian prophecy for the church and for the nations from a servant of God called to speak God’s word

Fishers Of Men Or Fishers Of Money?

Fishers Of Men Or Fishers Of Money? (from Battered Sheep)
by Van Robison

“Jesus told Peter and Andrew, who were brothers and who were also fishermen by trade, “Follow Me and I will make you FISHERS OF MEN” (Matthew 4:18-19). Many are the preachers today who proclaim they are fishing for souls, all the while they are really fishing for material riches, wealth, fame, prestige, money, power and authority. The church world is overrun with preachers who have gone fishing and cast their nets for million dollar homes, multi-million dollar homes, jet airplanes, motor coaches, expensive boats, free travels all around the world, and endless other luxuries. How many self-proclaimed pastors today seek personal disciples to follow themselves and to “partner” with them so that they can live a life of royalty, all the while pretending to represent Jesus Christ?

The modern day “money changers” in the church world are much like the money changers that Jesus Christ chastised in Matthew 21:12-13. Their motives were not in serving God, but in FINANCIAL PROFITS. The “fish” (people) in the sea that get hooked on shinning lures are innumerable. Oddly, one of the most weird things about life is that those to whom people give their money to eventually become their masters. Prosperity preachers become lords and masters of their “tithe” payers, “seed sowers” and “partners”, because these “fish” (people) look to these professional money fishers, as if they are God Himself. They are hooked.

Money fishers in the church world are professional fishers of material riches. They use the false tithing doctrine as a primary hook. They use the false “sow a seed, reap a harvest” hook. They use the false “offering” hook. They also very effectively engage people to attend their conferences, camp meetings and revivals which are all great money making opportunities. The glittering lures deceive multitudes. Most of the fish (people) have innocent hearts and honorable intentions, but they are actually bait for sharks. Jesus Christ is not bought with money, nor does the salvation of anyone depend upon “partnering” with sharks. Money is the great obsession of the modern church world. The church industry, which is a mega religious empire, is a great, modern day money institution. Anyone with an interest can key into the Internet and read about the massive material wealth of the Roman Catholic Church, the Mormon Church, and the entire Protestant Church world. Not only do the churches build innumerable “church” buildings, temples and cathedrals, but they also own commercial businesses, expensive real estate, land and properties, and countless other assets. All this is of course, in the name of God or Jesus Christ and the result of the never ending flow of free money from the gullible and naive.

The type of giving that Jesus Christ taught is vastly different from the teachings of the church money masters. Perhaps one of the great oddities in the church world today is that the masses of people will give to the wealthy churches, the wealthy celebrity preachers, and to the rich television preachers, while they neglect the poor, the widows, the elderly and the needy. The rich money preachers gladly rob the poor and the widows, and think nothing of taking the last dime of even those who live on social security. I personally know wealthy people who gladly contribute to money hungry celebrity preachers, while they are very stingy towards the poor. Jesus was the Champion of the humble, the meek, the lowly in spirit, the helpless, the defenseless, the needy and those who cried out to Him. The world is full of money sharks in the church world, who come as “angels of light”, but who hook all the fish (people) they can.

If there is one thing Christian people need, it is discernment, because many are caught in the nets of fishers of money. Money goes hand in hand with power and control over the lives of common people. The money masters are masters at making money and deceiving the gullible. The secure way to avoid being caught in the nets of the money changers and the fishers of money, is to not swallow the bait of the fishers of money, and instead follow Jesus Christ and His teachings.”

  1. What perplexes me more is the need to build huge megachurch sized buildings. Seems like every church I went to (except one, that added on a large room or two as they went along) was always collecting for a building fund.
Why not just wait on a real estate down cycle (like now) and get a “shell” of a building for pennies on the dollar if you must buy, rather than rent.
I’d like to think that the Lord won’t tarry much longer and kind of doubt that these buildings will even be standing with all the hell that’s going to break loose.

  2. “I personally know wealthy people who gladly contribute to money hungry celebrity preachers, while they are very stingy towards the poor.”

They give their money to people who teach that being in poverty or lacking materially is a sign of their lack of faith. So, from THAT standpoint it makes sense to give to those whose faith is “strong” rather than to the poor whose faith is “weak”. Why “waste” your money pouring it into the “weak in faith”? It’s better to invest it where faith is “strong” and the “spirit is moving”.

Of course, I completely disagree with this because I think it completely contradicts what Jesus taught. But having been in the “in need” category for many years, I’ve been on the receiving end of this type of belief, even from family members. Sad, but true.

  4. The problem with our churches began in 1954 when they sold their birthright of freedom an liberty to speak out against ungodly and unholy politicians from the pulpit. It was only a short nine years later that (1) atheist woman got prayer removed from our schools and the decline is accelerating in an exponential curve downward. If you are serious about doing something about it but the book and help start a grassroots movement to put an end to the greed in our churches. The book is available http://www.johnnorrisbook.com

  5. These so called preachers with their “money eye” will someday give account on that Day. How long? Only to eat, power, fame, leadership then after that, what? We (they) forgot that they will meet Him at that day. that’s am not moved or touched by any “big man” of God especailly when i see so much wealht, contrary to the apostles and prophets. All you will hear, we are in the 21st century, things are modern, we don’t have to be like the people of the old days.We are in the cutting edge. Cutting edge indeed! God will cut the whole thing to ash! Woe unto ye,ye prosperity teachers!

  6. About 12 years ago, I was a member of Zoe Ministries located at 310 Riverside Drive, New York, NY.

I came in after watching a tv program of his (BET Networks) and he had a guest speaker Mike Murdock.

Wisdom! That is what I was searching for! So, I visited the church and because of the magnetic-hypnotic music, and charismatic preacher (Jordan) I became a member.

After 1 year of being “fleeced” from my money…

(anyone who ever attended the church regularly can tell you that he would “joke” from the pulpit that he would ‘close the doors and not open them until everyone gave…’ he also said on occassions not to be surprised if he put an ‘ATM’ machine in the front!)

… I finally realized what was really going on. First, a former (before he was fired) Reverend of the church told me to “stop giving so much”. Next, one Sunday Jordan announced we should study from the book “Science of the Mind” (this book has nothing to do with Jesus, in fact, it is about empowering oneself using your OWN mind), then another Sunday was my exit – when Jordan was talking about horoscopes and astrology and how they DO guide us in life. I stood up from the church in the middle of service, and never came back.

Fast forward to the present. Today June 1, 2009, I see him again on tv offering a prophesy to someone. She actually said in reference to astrology that it was her “Solar Return” and she sowed a said he specified for that! OMG!!!!

He is now “out of the psychic closet” and openly advocating astrology!

So, I guess the bible is “wrong” when it says to remove astrology from the religion, but the part in Malachi about “tithes and offerings” is “OK”????

This is the stuff that turns people AWAY from God. At this point in my life, I go to no church, and my belief in God is very shaky.

    Its’ all B.S.!!!!

Thank you for sharing with us. I’m so sorry to hear of your experiences. Sadly, they’re all too common when people have experienced spititual abuse.

I pray that you’d get a revelation of God, who He is, and return to him and that by the gifts of faith and wisdom you’d be able to keep your eyes on Him and not man in the days ahead.
