Barack Obama: Many Paths Lead to God & Embracing The Divine Within

by John from True Discernment

“The Faith of Barack Obama written by New York Times best-selling author Stephen Mansfield was released in August by Thomas Nelson publishers. The book carries the endorsement of Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the front cover. Tutu, one of the global “Elders,” calls the book “perceptive and well-written.” The publisher’s description of the book reads:

“…takes readers inside the mind, heart, and soul of presidential hopeful Barack Obama–as a person of faith, as a man, as an American, and possibly as our future commander in chief.”

Mansfield, says: “If a man’s faith is sincere, it is the most important thing about him, and it is impossible to understand who he is and how he will lead without first understanding the religious vision that informs his life.”

According to Mansfield, Obama is “raising the banner of what he hopes will be the faith-based politics of a new generation . . . and he will carry that banner to whatever heights of power his God and the American people allow.”

Recently, when Obama was interviewed by Rick Warren, Obama told Warren that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior. Yet this “banner” Obama raises is one that has an inter-spiritual foundation, representing a new kind of “Christianity,” one that looks more like Brian McLaren’s spirituality than traditional, biblical Christianity.

What emerges from this book is a glimpse of a man who has New Age philosophy, believing that other religions are legitimate paths to God, and all humanity is connected together (spiritually speaking – i.e., God is in all):

“Obama does clearly believe that the form of Christianity that he committed to at Trinity Church in 1985 is not the only path to God. ‘I am rooted in the Christian tradition,’ he has said. Nevertheless he asserts, ‘I believe there are many paths to the same place and that is a belief there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people.’

“He first saw his broad embrace of faith modeled by his mother. ‘In our household,” he has explained, ‘The Bible, [t]he Koran, and the Bhagavad Gita sat on the shelf … on Easter or Christmas Day my mother might drag me to a church, just as she dragged me to the Buddhist temple, the Chinese New Year celebration, the Shinto shrine, and ancient Hawaiian burial sites.’” (p.55 of Mansfield’s book, quoting from Audacity of Hope, Obama, p. 203).

After his inter-spiritually-based upbringing, Obama later spent twenty years in a church, which promotes the panenthestic (God in all), inter-spiritual approach. In a 2006 article in United Church News, Obama stated that the teachings of the UCC (United Church of Christ), of which he was a member (Trinity United Church of Christ) until recently, are “foundation stones for his political work.” Just what are those “teachings” comprised of? On Trinity’s website, on the Yoga page, the following statement is highlighted:

“Within each [of] us is the seed of Divinity. Each Soul is divine. I bow to the divinity in us all!”

This is classic Hinduism that teaches that divinity resides in every human being. It is also the message of the New Age movement — man’s divinity!

In Obama’s own autobiography, Audacity of Hope, he calls himself a “progressive” (i.e., emerging or postmodern) and says: “We need to take faith seriously not simply to block the religious right but to engage all persons of faith in the larger project of American renewal” (p. 216). Echoing the sentiments of Rick Warren (a close friend of Obama, says Warren), he clarifies that partnerships between “religious and secular” will have to be built, and “each side will need to accept some ground rules for collaboration” (p. 216). He adds:

“Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.” (p. 218)

Obama insists that to base national “policy” on biblical truths “would be a dangerous thing” to do (p. 220).

There is one sentence in Audacity of Hope that sums up Barack Obama’s spirituality. He states:

“When I read the Bible, I do so with the belief that it is not a static (stable) text but the Living Word and that I must be continually open to new revelations.” (p. 224) In other words, just as Tony Jones said in his book The New Christians, and just as other emergents consistently say, the truths in the written Word of God, the Bible, are not unchanging and cannot be looked upon as stable or immoveable. “New revelations” can bring about new “truths” . . . truth is fluid.

To be interspiritual (all paths lead to God), to be panentheistic (divinity is in all), to reject God’s Word, and to embrace mysticism is to be what Alice Bailey called a rejuvenated Christian, who is one who follows “another gospel” and “another Jesus” (II Corinthians 11:4).

“Jesus saith unto him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.’”  (John 14:6)

  1. When I was in primary school, just 10 or 11 years old, I was taught by my History teacher that Islam, Christianity and Judaism lead to one God. I argued with my mum regarding this “new found knowledge”, deeming her ignorant when she said they were not the same. It’s funny that I was highly suspicious and unhappy with Catholicism, but was ready to believe Islam and Christianity were very similar.

After I became born again, it used to be that born again Christians would refute any connection between Islam and Christianity in terms of salvation, but now born again Christians are embracing this lie again.

Obama is probably a nominal Christian who needs to be saved and to believe that Jesus Christ is the only Lord and only way.

  2. An endorsement by Tutu is suspect as he is an “influential member” of the Club of Rome which includes the following other “influential members:”

Marianne Williamson (champion of A Course in Miracles)
Tony Blair (whose interfaith Faiths Foundation is highly ecumenical)
    Deepak Chopra (New Age guru)
Barbara Marx Hubbard (another New Age champion)

    Current full fledged members include:

    Javier Solana
    Robert Muller
    Bill Clinton
    Jimmy Carter
    Mikhail Gorbachev
    Bill Gates
    Al Gore
    Maurice Strong

“Sacrilegious though this may sound, democracy is no longer well suited for the tasks ahead. The complexity and the technical nature of many of today’s problems do not always allow elected representatives to make competent decisions at the right time.”

  5. There are a lot of Christians who profess the Christian faith and say they are born again but are otherwise (at least in m country it’s like that. You can stand up and say the sinner’s prayer but doesn’t mean you’re born again because only God knows your heart- some people do it to stick to their girl/boy fireinds, some to please their friend who brought them to church, some are lonely and want to make friends, some want aid from the church etc etc. We only know by looking at the person’s lifestyle, principles and beliefs after that salvation prayer. If Obama really said that and his mother can have the Quran etc and even enter temples etc (which are full of spirits, he is certainly not born again. No one with the Holy Spirit living in him will ever say there are many means to get to heaven – that would defeat the great commission that jesus gave us. Either he is not born again or his flesh is really desperate to be president, he is buttering the non Christians up. In a nutsehll, it is easier to accept what he says above if you accept he is not a Christian. Christian belief is made out of some main doctrines that cannot be disputed and one of them is Jesus Christ is the only way. isn’t it obvious now he’s not a Christian?

  8. Do the words of John 14:6 mean anything to these people?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

I remember being a teenager, wrapped in the veil of darkness. I read the Bhagavad Gita, as well as the Necronomicon. But when I encountered the resurrected Saviour, my life was changed forever.

An oath for confirmation is a end of all strife. Jesus Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one who believes in Him. There is salvation in no other name.

  10. Miriam,

I googled Club of Rome and this their website:

    http://www.clubofrome.org/

Actually, I was quited interested to hear of the COR from this site, because I was reading about the Club of Rome in passing (I can’t even recall the proper context) just yesterday, but it was in connection with my research on Knights of Malta, Freemasons and a popular evangelist. I can’t remember where I read about this, but I wonder if he, the evangelist, was being connected to the Club of Rome.

  14. Craig – interesting info on the COR. If I’d heard of them before I don’t recall, but do you know if they have ties with the CFR (Council on Foreign Relations)? I suspect they probably have members in common, if nothing else. It sounds like they have similar agendas.

When I visited their website, it looks like their web-hosting is done in China? (http://cor.hm-media.ch was the location my browser was waiting for a response from…)

I just did a search, and found this: http://hmcompanies.com/

  15. Club of Rome info:

They have NGO (non-governmental organization) status with the UN:

    Mission :
To contribute to the understanding of the whole set of problems of modern society facing humanity, To act as a global catalyst of change that is free of any political, ideological or business interest [yeah, right!] To reinforce the awakening that this complex of problems tangled up, changing and difficult, constitutes, across the political borders, racial or economic, a threat without precedent for all the people, and must be faced by a multinational mobilization of human and material resources
To disseminate the results of these studies and reflections to the public, in the scientific, intellectual and political circles and decision-making centres at all levels, in order to exercise maximum influence on the conduct of world affairs in a more rational and operational manner.

    http://erc.unesco.org/ong/en/directory/ONG_Desc.asp?mode=gn&code=908

This organization was referenced by Constance Cumbey in 1982 (predating her first book The Hidden Dangers of the Rainbow) in her booklet Is the Antichrist in the World Today – an interview with Southwest Radio Church. Quote:

“The Club of Rome is one of many organizations behind [the New Age] movement… The Club of Rome is important because it has drawn up blueprints for a new world order…”

This site has done quite a bit of research:

    http://green-agenda.com/globalrevolution.html

Beware of anything ‘green’ since these are usually New Age/NWO in origin. Unfortunately, many huminatarian organizations have NA/NWO ties. It makes me wonder how much of the donations actually go to the stated cause.

If you scroll down all the way to the bottom of this page and click on the “these quotes and excerpts” link you’ll get some REAL eye openers. How about depopulation down to 100 million or so:

“My three main goals would be to reduce human population to about 100 million worldwide, destroy the industrial infrastructure and see wilderness, with it’s full complement of species, returning throughout the world.”

  16. Cia,

The only ties besides some common membership between CFR and CoR is that they both enjoy NGO status with the UN. It appears there is a purposeful overlap of functions of various groups/orgs and personnel working toward the NWO.

  17. Yes, I would like to volunteer Dave Foreman as the first candidate!! Things are getting very interesting, and moving very quickly!! One good catastrophe and everything could fall into place in a day! Mr. Solana has his hands in every pie, and I for one dont think it coincidence! I may be beating a dead horse but I still think a Russian attack on Israel with a terrorist attack on our coasts here in America could easily set the stage for the antichrist. We would be reeling from the attack and the EU would be ready willing and able to step in and take our place! Russia would be out of the way per EZE.38-39 as GOD will directly deal with them. Also Craig, there is a chapter on the COR in RECOMENDATION 666. GOD BLESS!!

YouTube Censors Obama Abortion Record Video

    Monday, September 22, 2008 9:20 AM

YouTube has ordered the removal of a video from its site.

The starring character of the exiled video is none other than Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

The Kansas Coalition for Life has produced a film clip called “Obama: WRONG Change for Children.” It provides facts on Obama’s voting record on abortion-related bills, including his refusal to ban partial birth abortion, to grant parental notification before an abortion is performed on a minor, and to protect babies born alive as the result of a botched abortion procedure.

YouTube sent the Kansas Coalition for Life a boilerplate note stating that the video was being blocked because it did not meet a “Community Guideline.”

The “problem” with the video appears to be that it exposes some facts about Obama that may potentially turn some voters against him.

“The video is in no way distasteful, pornographic or outside of the ordinary,” the Kansas group’s director Mark Gietzen says.

The piece starts with a disclaimer, which warns of upcoming “graphic images” that “Obama supports.” Although it briefly shows a photo of an aborted baby, YouTube has a large number of similar images of aborted children posted on its site.

According to Gietzen, the video “was pulled only because it makes a simple, clear statement about what Obama’s change is all about.”

Operation Rescue, a pro-life organization, has come to the free expression rescue and posted the video on its site.

The YouTube execs who booted the video might try Googling the words “political” and “censorship.”

YouTube apparently doesn’t feel the need to employ “Community Guidelines” in the case of a video attack that uses the vilest of language against GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

In a YouTube video of Sandra Bernhard, the hateful comic can be seen attacking Palin with horrendous viciousness.

Bernhard can be viewed and heard calling Palin “Uncle Women,” a “turncoat b***h and “wh**e,” amid a sortie of other vulgarities.

Bernhard recently made news for a line she threw out about Palin, which she claims was just part of her New York act. She said Palin would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” if she entered Manhattan, according to the New York Daily News.

Bernhard suggests that the ugly statement was “part of a much larger, nuanced and, yes, provocative — that’s what I do — piece from my show about racism, freedom, women’s rights and the extreme views of Gov. Sarah Palin, a woman who doesn’t believe that other women should have the right to choose.”

    “Women deserve better,” Bernhard added.

She then attempted to clarify things but not without giving another jab.

“I certainly wish Governor Palin no harm. I’d just like her to explain to me how she can hold such outrageous views — and then go back to Alaska,” Bernhard said.

She told the Express Night Out Web site, “I’ll have things to say about John McCain — and Cindy McCain, who I find to be a Barbie doll hooker, you know. But I’ll find a fun way to say it.”

More fun? Guess even that word has to be redefined.

Her stage show, titled “Without You I’m Nothing,” is scheduled to come to the nation’s capital during September.

  22. It is also interesting to note that one of Obama’s National Security Advisors is Zbigniew Brzezinski, a major contributer to both the Club of Rome and the Trilateral Commission. From an even scarier, biblical perspective
his name means, peace declarer – and his last name is also the same as one of the biggest Nazi Concentration camps of WWII, Auschwitz-Birkenau. The camp took its name from the nearby town of Birkenau, the German translation of Brzezinka, which refers to the many birch trees surrounding the complex that annihilated over 3 million people.

  24. Pro-Life Rick Warren to Give Invocation at Obama Inauguration
    December 17, 2008

Pro-life pastor Rick Warren will give the invocation at President-Elect Barack Obama’s inauguration. It makes a whole lot of sense. Even though Warren and Obama disagree on the life issue, they do see eye to eye on many social justice issues. This move is also classic Obama because it is a signal to religious conservatives that he’s willing to bring in both sides to the faith discussion in this country. Obama has never shied away from that.

  27. Where Have You Placed Your Trust Today?

There is no help in man.
His efforts are simply worthless or vain.
The Lord is the one and only confidence of His people (Proverbs 3:26).
In fact, He is “the confidence of all the ends of the earth” (Psalm 65:5).

Psalm 146:3 outrightly directs – “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”

The Scriptures tell us that there are many things in which man places his trust.

He oftentimes depends on another man for help. The Word of God says that he makes “flesh his arm” (Jeremiah 17:5).
He trusts in “uncertain riches” (1 Timothy 6:17) and “the abundance of his riches” (Psalm 52:7).
In making decisions, he trusts in “his own heart” (Proverbs 28:26).
While living in sin, he places his trust in his own “wickedness” to cover up his sin (Isaiah 47:10).
He relies on the world system – “Egypt” – for help because they are “strong” and “many” (Isaiah 31:1).
Lastly, he trusts in “princes” or leaders for help, safety, deliverance, etc. (Psalm 146:3).

The Scriptures also explain that those who trust in –
…man – are “cursed” since their mind and heart turn aside from the Lord (Jeremiah 17:5)
    …their riches – fall (Proverbs 11:28]
…their own hearts – are fools (Proverbs 28:26)
…their own wickedness – are perverted (Isaiah 47:10)
…the “shadow of Egypt” (the protection of the government) – the world system – reap confusion (Isaiah 30:3)
…princes or leaders – receive no lasting help, relief, safety, or deliverance (Psalm 146:3).

On the other hand, the Word of God does tell us where to place our trust.

Micah 7:7 says – “…I will look unto the LORD…”
Psalm 62:8 says – “Trust in Him at all times…”
Proverbs 3:5 says – “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart…”

When we trust in the Lord, the Bible says that –
    …we are blessed (Psalm 40:4; Jeremiah 17:7)
    …God fights our battles (2 Chronicles 32:8]
…He saves and delivers us from our persecutors (Psalm 7:1)
…We are not afraid of evil tidings when they come (Psalm 112:7)
…We live in safety (Proverbs 29:25)
…We are as Mount Zion – solid, sturdy, and immovable in our faith (Psalm 125:1).

The Bible admits that it is better to put our confidence in the Lord than in man or even princes (Psalm 118:8-9).

Psalm 60:11 explains why – “for vain is the help of man.”

If we have not learned it yet, we will eventually come to the conclusion that man’s help is generally ineffectual, to no purpose, empty, and worthless.
“…Safety is of the LORD” (Proverbs 21:31).
“…Salvation is of the LORD” (Jonah 2:9).
Victory comes “through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Isaiah 2:22 admonishes us to – “Cease ye from man…”
Our opening Scripture commands – “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”
On the contrary, Hebrews 13:6 says – “So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”

There is no help in man. His efforts are simply worthless or vain.
The Lord is the one and only confidence of His people (Proverbs 3:26).
In fact, He is the “confidence of all the ends of the earth” (Psalm 65:5).

    Do you honestly believe that?

Then prove it by turning completely from the “arm of flesh” and totally trusting in the Lord Jesus today.
