Oral Roberts University to lay off 100 employees

Thanks to Brad who directed me to this story and the accompanying articles, saying:

‘ORU to lay off 100 employees SO WHAT HAPPENED TO ORAL ROBERTS PROSPERITY PREACHINGS ABOUT GOD BEING THE SOURCE OF YOUR TOTAL SUPPLY’?

Indeed. But it is hardly the first time a tele-evangelist has contradicted himself and cannot live out what he promises to others – in return for their financial seeds of course. Maybe this dishonest bunch of faith scammers should have pulled the ‘God has said if I do not have x million by x, I will die’  stunt like Oral Roberts famously did on TV. But wait, I think the public are wise to that one now and the message needs tweaked a bit for the modern audience. Hmm. Maybe the public will believe one of Richard Roberts’ new ministering angels ’speaking’ {see here for an article about them] that apparently accompany his ministry trips now, that Richard Roberts invented to keep up with the latest charismatic fad and the proverbial Jones’s. Like Bob Jones. Ugh!

“Oral Roberts University will lay off about 100 employees, days after it agreed to a near-$450,000 separation agreement with its former president who resigned amid a spending scandal.

The layoffs represent roughly 10 percent of the university’s work force, but the school did not specify which departments would be targeted.

“You can’t spend more than you’re taking in,” said ORU interim president Ralph Fagin. “This is the last choice you want to make because we have such great employees.”

The school, with a budget this fiscal year of about $91.8 million, is more than $17 million in debt. Last year, it revealed it was more than $50 million in the red.

It has since whittled the figure down thanks largely to billionaire Oklahoma City businessman Mart Green, who took the reins at ORU in January after donating $70 million and pledging to restore the public’s trust in the school.

The announcement of layoffs comes days after the evangelical school completed a separation agreement with former president Richard Roberts, who stepped down last year amid allegations he misspent school funds to live in luxury.

Under the terms released Friday, ORU will pay Roberts his $223,600 annual salary for the remaining term of his appointment, which was to run through November 2009.

Before the separation agreement became final, Roberts also had to pay back $23,179 in personal and travel expenses incurred before 2004 that had not been billed to or paid by Roberts, the university said.

Roberts, the televangelist son of school founder Oral Roberts, was accused along with his wife, Lindsay, of spending money on shopping sprees, home improvements and a stable of horses for their daughters at a time when ORU was badly in debt. Both have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Fagin said Roberts’ payment package and the layoffs were unrelated issues. “The reduction in force is necessary regardless of what happened in any separation agreement,” he said.

Fagin said he anticipates cutting 100 employees will be enough, but refused Monday to rule out additional budget cuts. “It always is a moving target no matter what business you’re in,” he said.

Oral Roberts University will lay off about 100 employees early next year, the university announced Monday.

This action, along with steps to enhance revenue, are intended to help ORU be fiscally sound, school officials said.

“These are tough economic times for us all,” Interim President Ralph Fagin said in a news release. “Like any business , a university cannot spend more revenue that in collects. We have a responsibility to the ORU family to be good stewards of our resources.”

The employees losing their jobs will be notified in January and will then continue to be employed for 60 days. The university will offer job placement support for the employees.

ORU is no stranger to economic turmoil. It revealed it was $55 million in debt last year after a downward spiral beginning when the university was sued by three former professors for wrongful termination.

ORU received a $70 million donation from Yukon businessman Mart Green earlier this year. About $30 million was put toward repaying the debt and another $32 million has gone toward long-deferred maintenance project, increased financial aids and technological upgrades.

“The annual budget must be balanced,” Fagin said in the release. “Reducing costs through a reduction in force is a difficult but necessary step. We must make these tough decisions for ORU to achieve economic sustainability.”

TULSA, Okla. (AP) – Oral Roberts University announced Monday it would lay off about 100 employees, days after it gave nearly a $450,000 severance package to its former president who resigned amid a spending scandal.

Employees whose positions are affected will be notified by mid-January, the school said.

School leaders hinted at the possibility of layoffs and other budget reductions earlier this spring.

On Friday, the evangelical school completed a separation agreement with former president Richard Roberts, who stepped down last year amid allegations he misspent school funds to live in luxury.

Under the terms, ORU will pay Roberts his $223,600 annual salary for the remaining term of his appointment, which was to run through November 2009, for a total of $447,200.

Last month, ORU reached a settlement with two former professors who sued last year, claiming they were forced out after uncovering financial and ethical wrongdoing by Richard Roberts and his family.

The confidential settlement with Tim and Paulita Brooker came at the end of a court-ordered mediation session.
The Robertses still face a lawsuit brought by Trent Huddleston, a former senior accountant at ORU, who is suing for wrongful termination.

He alleges he was ordered to help “cook the books” by hiding improper and illegal financial wrongdoing from authorities and the public and directed against his will to falsely list thousands of dollars as expenses rather than assets to defraud the Internal Revenue Service.
Richard Roberts resigned days after Huddleston’s suit was filed.

  1. If this man has even the tiniest smidgen of integrity, he will take his half-million-dollar settlement and split it between the 100 people being laid off. It would help for Christmas. He’s as bad as all the other CEOs getting their giant bonuses for running their banks and companies into the ground.

  2. In this new Judgment many more ministries will get in trouble and hopefully Benny Hinn because dumb sheep cannot give them money when they themselves don’t have it

  3. God will not be mocked-he is slowly but surely dismantling these heretical ‘Jesus’ camps
If they won’t Judge themselves (1Jn 4;1) ,God will do it for them

  4. I saw Richard and Lindsey on satellite tv the other day and they said the only way God would bless people is if they sowed seeds into ministries. They are the curse of ORU. I know ORU is filled with great people but God is judging Richard and he still will not listen. When he was preaching I could tell he was pricked in his conscience about what he was saying but he said it anyway. They also preached tithing and that about made me want to scream in anger.

  5. This is a long time overdue, I’m afraid. And it comes straight from the money-grubbing mismanagement style of the Roberts family that has been going on for over 50 years. Before Richard did it, Oral did it and he inspired many a flock-fleecer. My dad can tell stories from his childhood in the 30s and 40s that will curl one’s hair of how these guys would move through backwoods Oklahoma and hoover up extra ca$h like there was no tomorrow. Oral is only the most famous of the bunch because he was the best.

  7. I just got a Lindsay Roberts letter in the mail announcing Richard’s birthday and what I could do to help celebrate this GREAT MAN :
‘A few months ago God used Richard’s dad, Oral Roberts, to give him an exciting Prophetic Word…that as he reached his 60th birthday, the windows of heaven would open on his life and ministry in a way he has never witnessed before…Miracles and supernatural works of God would flow in and through him in a way that would cause the ministry to which God has called him to literally explode around the world’.

Then the letter goes on about what Richard would like for his birthday. You guessed it, more money!!!! To finish their Ministry Broadcast Center.

‘I thought about what Richard has done when he’s been faced with situations like this in the past..He would give what he had and then he would invite those who have been touched by this ministry to plant a seed in this good ground for the harvest they needed from God for their own lives’.

The letter goes on to say they could complete the project for $150.000. If we could only send in a SPECIAL BIRTHDAY SEED then they wouldn’t have to cut back on other worthwhile projects. Following in the letter is a few slate of hand gimmicks such as filling in the special birthday card enclosed (with your best seed) and Richard will read it on TV. (Wow! you’ll be a Christian celebrity)

The world knows how this huckster family have ripped off their university and the public and they are still trying to sell the same old snake oil with the same old speal. Of course Richard is moving into the supernatural racket that dad told.

Would someone please explain why anyone would send these people money now that they have been exposed in the media?

  10. Like ORU, Marilyn Hickey Ministries is trying to make a former employee pay back severance pay,[which is myself]. It was one weeks wages for every two years of employment. I worked for M.H.M. for six years in the Prayer Center. I received a threatening letter on Jan. 22, 2009, stating that I was not to continue pursuing Unemployment Benefits? It is my LEGAL RIGHT to be able to file for Unemployment, even if I do not get it, based on their Non-Profit Corporation status!! Are these Religious Organizations above the LAW???

    Comment by Tandi D. Padilla | January 29, 2009

  11. LAWSUITS AMONG BELIEVERS – THE BIBLE SAYS IN: 1 Corinthians 6:1; If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgement instead of before the saints? And In: 1 Corinthians 6:7-8; The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

Doesn’t this apply to the ORU and Marilyn Hickey Ministries case? Are they above GOD’S law?

    Comment by Tandi | January 31, 2009

  12. Refering to the letter I received from Marilyn Hickey Ministries on January 22, 2009, written by Roland Tamminga; Chief Financial Officer& Inhouse Counsel. It was in regards to the Employee Separation Agreement. The letter stated: “Tandi, we appreciate the services you provided to Marilyn Hickey Ministries; however, we must put you on notice that in accordance with this Agreement, should you pursue any further type of claim against the Ministry, we will been entitled to make a demand for full recovery of the severance payment made to you at the time of your separation of employment.
Why do Christian Organizations such as ORU and Marilyn Hickey Ministries always so apt. to “Sue,” when GODS Word forbids it? Filing for Unemployment Benefits should not be wrong? And as fellow Christians why do we treat each other in such a way, by “sueing” each other??
