Brazilians accused of racism in SA church

“A storm is brewing at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, with South African pastors accusing their Brazilian bishop of racism, discrimination and favouring Portuguese pastors.

At least 50 pastors have left the church since the end of 2008 and some of those who have left say there are hundreds of others who are too afraid to leave because they have no financial backing.

In February, a large group of unhappy pastors sent a letter to the founder of the church, Bishop Edir Masedo, spelling out the discrimination they have been subjected to, but they have not received a response to their complaints.

Despite undertakings from the UCKG’s press office that they would respond to the allegations on Friday, they failed to return questions sent to them.

This week, Pastor Frans Nkabande and two other pastors, one of whom has recently left and another who plans to leave, said the church was a “trap”.

The church, which originates in Brazil, was brought to South Africa in 1992.

There are around 800 African pastors and 300 Brazilian pastors, and the church is believed to have one of the biggest church followings in South Africa.

The aggrieved pastors have raised allegations of forced vasectomies for the pastors, racism, pay discrepancies, severe humiliation and intimidation.

Nkabande said: “At first you don’t worry about these things because you think you are busy with the work of the Lord. But this discrimination has been ongoing for a while.

“There is no leave, no time to see your extended family. You work from 5.30am until 8pm every day. They pay for your accommodation.

“You are not allowed to have any training not authorised by the church and are not allowed to have a separate savings account. They say you shouldn’t be attached to material possessions and that these are sacrifices for the work of God.”

There have also been allegations of dismissals without the pastors being notified.

The pastors are also questioning “adulterous pastors” who have not been disciplined, and some Brazilian pastors who they claim have stolen money, but have not been dismissed.

“They are not dismissed or disciplined. The South African pastors, on the other hand, are humiliated in front of the entire range of pastors for their wrongdoings. Punishment is not for Brazilian pastors, only for us,” said another pastor, who did not want to be named.

“We have worked so hard to make this church and now they are getting all the advantages,” added the third pastor, who did not want to be identified.

Other allegations are that families are not informed of pastors’ deaths. And while African pastors are given the bare minimum to attend funerals of their close relatives, the Brazilian pastors receive all-expenses-paid returns home that have amounted to up to R20 000, local pastors claim.

Another of their grievances is salary discrepancies between the pastors.

Young Brazilian pastors allegedly receive more than married South African pastors who have been involved in the ministry for many years.

And the wives and widows of the pastors are treated differently.

Pastors are forced to pay the Association of Bishops and Pastors R330 each fortnight. They are told that it is a form of medical aid, but if they become ill, they have no access to these funds and are told to get quotes from doctors.

South African wives are called “volunteers” while the Brazilian wives are given salaries.

Widows of Brazilian pastors are looked after and stay in the church’s homes, while the South African widows have to find their own accommodation and get menial jobs, the local pastors allege.

There are very few African pastors put in positions of leadership while the Brazilian pastors progress despite the language barrier, they add.”

While I am glad some UCKG pastors are speaking out, at the same time it still grieves me what seems  to be their main motives for speaking out, for denouncing and leaving the UCKG and calling it a ‘trap’. If the leaders and their wives were given equal pay, honor and promotion to the Brazilian leaders [which seems to be what most of this gripe is about], would that be Ok for them, so that they would be perfectly happy and content as long as they  are financially Ok  and not abused -while they remain to oversee the leading astray, the fleecing and abusing of the flock?

There is so much wrong with the UCKG. Are [most] of these leaders only concerned when it is about saving their own skins? What kind of shepherds are they then?

  1. I am a member of the UCKG and what you have just said is true these pastor are only concerned about themselves, about their financial stability. First being a pastor is voluntary work being concerned about people being saved and knowing God. Atleast they have shelter, food and clothes to wear. There are many people who are preachers who do not recieve anything but continue preaching because their main concern is about helping people to find God. If you read the Bible it says MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL.

  2. a pastor in the uckg knows very well that you choose to leave everyrthing behind when you take up the role as a pator to do the work of God AND are even given chances to step down after a while if you feel that they dont want to do the work of God. So if someone knowingly agrees to the sacrifice, they have no right to complain. Addressing the matter of favouritism i would not know exactly what happens between the pastors, but we have to remember to keep our eyes on God and not man, and if the pastors are doing wrong then God will remove them eventually. Its His work He wouldnt and couldnt let people mess it up for the sake of their own gain. Humans are not perfect and yes make many mistakes, the same with men of God or pastors, they have there faults and i dont believe it should be blamed on the ministry but on the individual that causes the problem. i am sure if those pastors that left complaining would have tried to sort out the discrepencies in a more mature way than things would have been sorted out or changed. Man can decieve man but none can decieve Him. in the end He will judge us all.

  3. Its amazing how the other christians are always looking at others; wrongs and rights. mean while churhs are busy pointing fingures at other churches satan is busy eating up lost souls! who said the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God was perfect?? Who said they were angels and not human like us? why when these things happen people seem so amused? didn’t Jesus say they will happen?

Coming to the issue of this pastors! why are they so greedy? were they there to save soules or to compite? didn’t they know that by becoming pastors they are leaving everything behind including their families? why is it new now? were they serving the bishop or God? why now are they leaving the work of God because of man? if indeed they were there for the work of God they would not even recognise how are the others treated because their eyes would be fixed on lost souls!

  6. As i read through the article about Brazillians accused of racism in SA.is not that the pastors of South Africa accussed them about that,i think they are actually looking for equality.

  7. I am an ex pastor of Universal church in South Africa, and I am Braziliam, I decided to step down from being a pastor because I became frustrated after 7 year in South Africa and not seen greats results concerning people actually getting CONVERTED to Jesus Christ – This was the main reason for me to ask to come back to Brazil.
When you decide or have the willing to be a pastor of UCKG (universal church) you are told that the work will be hard, the financial help will only provide the enough for you to eat and dress – the aim is NOT the money. You are also told that in case you choose to live – you will have no rights of money whatsoever, THIS HAPPENED WITH ME!!!!
When I arrived in Brazil, I spoke to Bishop incharge and decide to become a member… I went to my mother´s house and started a new life ( now as a member ) NO MONEY WAS GIVEN TO ME WHATSOEVER FOR THE 7 years worked hard in South Africa – and I thank God for that for I could not live myself if it were different…

I have good and bad experiences with South Africa Pastors, some are really dedicated and deserve to be honoured… others are lazzy and decided to become a pastor thinking that would get rich or have an easy life… this are the ones who fight…

Well, that´s exactly why I became frustrated or disapointed for unfortunately become of some bad pastors the whole church suffers…

I assure you that there is NO RACISM from the Brazilians Pastors part towards South African Pastors… I have friends there that I actually miss… and besides if we were racism.. why would us open a church in South Africa?

About the money.. the bible itself says about Tithe and offerings… NO ONE is forced to give anything!

Please think about first before you throw stones… for the Brazilians pastors are making a big sacrifice being far away from theirs families/parents/country…

    Thanks!

  8. Former pastor I can tel you now that you are taking advantage of the poor african countries. Why brazilian pastors are not preaching in black township. I mean in hardship like SA pastors. you cannot give up your calling because people are converting. It was after 15 years that UCKG had a black Bishop after people were complaining. Most of the serivices are more into money more than any thing.

Why the are the poor people only been help once whereby the the chirch leader has private jetter. Why Pastors are not allowed to see they relatives. The truth will come out one day.

If the pastor is not making a lot of money is getting demoted. Africans should stand up and stop being used. This how our land were taken in the 1562.

  9. MY comment is to all pastor of the universal church (UCKG) and (Every other church or follower of Jesus Christ), God is all around us beholding the good and the evil works of man, SO AS THE WORD OF GOD SAYS IN THE LETTER TO THE 7 CHURCHES ALL OF THEN HAS FAULTS, SO TIME IS AT HAND NO ONE KNOWS THE DATE TIME OR THE HOUR THAT THE SON OF MAN IS GOING TO A PAIR IN THE CLOUDS SO WE MUST CLEAN UP ALL OF OUR SINFUL WAYS AND ASK FOR GOD FORGIVENESS SO THAT WE MAY BE COUNTED RIGHTEOUS IN THE SIGHT OF JESUS CHRIST WHEN HE A PAIR IN THE CLOUDS TO JUDGE US. 10. As a former member of this church, I had the opportunity of listening to these pastors testimonies and from what they say, they knew what the role was all about when they signed up and while I cannot comment upon the salary discretion because I was only a member and not a minister, I would have thought that the pastors would be more concerned over saving the sheep and not pay which shows that they could possibly be mere hirelings with no love for the sheep.

people have commented upon where does the money goes and that we should ask for evidence. Well, the branch in London sometimess presented us with a utility bill or something before they asked for offerings and invited people to come and view it. In terms of feeding the poor and helping the destitute, Money was spent on a new suite to provide training for the unemployed and other disadvantaged groups in order for them to find work, there are also hospital groups that visit the sick in hospital and pray for their healing, other groups who visit those in prison, and other groups for abused women and so forth, so that money does go towards charitable works. This is spread out to many of their branches and if anyone has an issue with this, then I am assuming that you will also disagree with Jesus who said that we should look after those less fortunate.

With regards to South Africa, it is my belief from the pictures and videos that they use to show us that they invest heavily in the local community. You see the UCKG believe in getting people to work and become self sufficient rather than just receiving handouts from us, their theory is that God is looking for strong women and men who he can use to demonstrate his mighty power though and this cannot be demonstrated though a life of poverty and scarcity.

I was there in a meeting when a Bishop who had spent some time in the church in South Africa commented about how hard it was to convince the people there (mainly poor black) that they dont have to be poor, they can also live a prosperous life like the whites and I believe that he used scripture. I do not know if he would have had any better luck if he had been black and that may be the whole issue. What people find hard to gasp is that God will and has used anyone to get his message across.

In the bible there are many instances when he has used people and animals (remember Balaam and the donkey) to communicate, as far as he is concerned, there is no such thing as black and white, therefore if people keep on acting pernickety and making big issues over the bishops/pastors skin colour or nationality then what do you expect? God is not a respector of persons and African and European alike you are still going to face your maker.

What I am trying to get at is that it should not make any difference if the brazilian pastors do not visit the township, perhaps they don’t because experience has shown that the people though their pernickety will respond more to a South-African black pastor or perhaps its a communication problem and another thing, when the uckg was first established in South Africa, who were the first pastors then, where they not brazilians? If the people in the township still have that apartheid mentality inside of their head and dont believe that they are entitled to a better life because they are black, surely it makes commonsense to present them with someone who has been sucessful.

  11. I agree with the above Comment by SMD.

I find it interesting how many folks complain b/c some pastor wants to be treated equally and not inferior to their boss. Is equality something NOT practiced amoungs many Christians? Perhaps that is a stupid and unfortunate obvious questions. Perhaps if Christians and pastors focus more on showing God’s LOVE, POWER, & help to:

    -all races
    -all sexes
    -all ages

etc. and not focus so much on differences, then perhaps those who do have issues can be delivered and healed!

I personally have never heard of the church, but most every religious organization (Jew, Islam, Catholic, Buddhist, etc.) ALL practice some sort of charitable giving. Just look at Catholic Charities of America or the Salvation Army! In addition, God said thru out the old testament the importance of tithes and offerings.

Xolile Bhengu misquoted the Bible. It’s NOT “$ is the root to all evil” but “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil”!

Now as for miracles, the main and ONLY reason I even started attending was for this Day of Decision to get your miracle. Since I started attending this small, African church in the states, I have ever since only attended churches that believe and practice miracles – ie, that God is actually STILL active and not sleeping on sabbatical like many Christians feel. There seems to be very little difference between those Christians who don’t believe in the supernatural and miracles and atheists.

As for what Shai said, “i am sure if those pastors that left complaining would have tried to sort out the discrepancies in a more mature way”

What makes you assume they DIDN’T try to fairly sort things out? It seems to me that the Brazilian are too busy being biased and racist to properly and fairly manage the leaders they train.
