Hillsong pastor Brian Houston defends ministry against cult claims

Article by Tuck Thompson from here, May 25 2009

“CELEBRITY evangelist Brian Houston has defended his Hillsong ministry against allegations it is a “cult-like” organisation as the Sydney megachurch opened a “campus” church on Brisbane’s southside yesterday.

He also denied Hillsong had misspent Commonwealth grant money or recruited students in NSW schools.

Mr Houston and his wife Bobbie were installed as the new senior pastors of one of Brisbane’s largest Pentecostal churches, the 1000-member Garden City Christian Church.

The church’s governing board is now dominated byMr Houston, pictured, and Hillsong appointees, and the church has been rebranded with Hillsong logos.

In an exclusive interview with The Courier-Mail,  Mr Houston, credited the dramatic growth of the 21,000-member Hillsong to a need for fellowship and “the grace of God”.

“It’s also because people want answers to life,” he said.

Criticism that Hillsong is overly focused on money, flashy entertainment and fund-raising, were rejected.

“We’re big and because we’re big people wonder what all this is about,” he said.

Hillsong critics, including politicians who have been contacted by former Hillsong members, have accused it of cult-like behaviour, including psychologically abusing people who questioned the church’s practices.

“Recruitment and fundraising is what it’s all about,” said Tanya Levine, whose book People in Glass Houses  exposes her experiences with Hillsong.

“Fundamentalism is not open to free thought and questions.”

But Mr Houston said Ms Levine was only a spectator.

“There’s 21,000 people who attend Hillsong on Sunday in Sydney and I would say 20,500 or 20,800 have awesome things to say,” he said.

Former ALP leader and long-time MP Carmen Lawrence, now teaching at the University of Western Australia, said there was not proper scrutiny of $600,000 in federal grant money Hillsong received for indigenous employment and hundreds of thousands more for other programs.

“One thing that worried me was whether they were using funds to recruit members for their church,” she said.

Mr Houston said “absolutely 100 per cent” of the allegations were false, blamed people with “an agenda” for prompting the reports, and gave assurances the ministry had strict accountability for grant money.

Students in NSW were not being recruited by Hillsong in schools, he said, although Hillsong was active in schools, as other churches were.

He also said Hillsong members giving 10 per cent of their pre-tax wages to the church were not asked directly to do so.”

  1. quote “People need answers to life”.

I thought people need the answer to the problem of sin so they will not be in hell and the end of their lifes.

The gospel of Hillsong is the same as that of Pastor Joseph Prince. It is prosperity, feel good gospel and only focused on succes in this life.

  4. Ruitje,
That’s what itching ears love to hear. That’s the way to ‘do church’- consumers focused marketing. I know many churches are engaging consultants to do just that and even make changes to minor things like church names, logo, and motto. This little church went to market, primarily to built their own vatican and empire.Loud music, not much different from a rock concert, lots of emotions and mystical experiences and feel good motivation sermons with scanty bible emphasis, are what attracts the big crowd, not to mention money. Emphasising on sin and repentance and hell and a born again lifestyle as in the epistle 1Jn 1-2 is regarded as out of touch with the times and modern needs, and will only drive away the members, and so no Bible exposition sermons for them.
The members are therefore easily susceptible to false teachings and deception.Just one example is how Mike Guglielmucci deceived the whole church and even the elders and the ‘prophets’.Lack of sound bible teachings make them careless and undiscerning. What they thought was a very very ‘annointed worship’ service, with alot of emotional highs and tears running down, turned out to be the greatest deception and hoax ever in Australian church history, and made the unbelievers mock at us.The deception had actually gone on for quite a while, and strangely enough, no one spotted it.Very very strange indeed. What puzzles me even up to now, is how the many prophets who prophesise over so many can even be deceived. Makes me wonder, really wonder??? Mention Hillsong to unbelievers in Australia and they will have a good laugh and now they have valid reasons too. So much extensive damage has already been done by Hillsong that even the credibility of other churches are affected because they get lumped in together as the same.
Such things happen and will happen again in Hillsong or for that matter any other church when plans are created out of human ambition, desires and wants, and not what Jesus wants, and when the word of God is handled in a way merely to attract the crowd, not to mention accountabily and transparency of the leadership.

  5. Etpw, Im always blessed by the articles you post on your site!! Keep up the good work (God working through you, of course). :)

I do have a question though. Could you please do an article or some sort of post giving the names of ministers that speak the Truth and are trustworthy? And could you please post more of your own teachings and writings like the one you did about the office of a prophet (can’t recall the exact name you titled it)?

I would love to read more of your writtings because they encourage me.

    Thanks

  11. Before I get stones thrown at me let me say one thing lol. Worship music as long as it honors God affects each individual differently. I honestly believe that we need to be relevant concerning worship music. I mean can you see a 16 year old kid listening to old hymns? I highly doubt it. We need music that is relevant to culture that still honors the King of Glory. God created music so we could praise him with it. There are a few heavy metal christian bands out there, that are sent to the darkest realms in music. As long as it glorifies God there is nothing wrong with it. If its rap and it glorifies the King of Kings, then praise God. Anyone hear remember reading stories about certain christian circles in the 1800’s thought pianos and musical instruments were evil. Now to my next point. If a person who seeks God with all their heart cries during worship does that mean they’re operating in fleshy emotions? Emotions are just a normal part in the Christian walk. David, a man after God’s own heart, was the most emotional people in the Bible. Did people condemn David for expressing emotions? Probably. I can’t think of any verse right now but if you look all through Psalms David was Joyful, lonely, had dissappointment, tasted rejection, felt sadness, had fears, was discouraged, etc. All these things I mentioned were all emotions. So if I cry during a worship song because I’m sorrowful or because I’m joyful of my Saviour then how is that fleshy???

And that goes back to the whole point. WE NEED TO WORSHIP GOD WITH OUR WHOLE BEING. Spirit, soul and body. We are the Temple of the Living God, he doesn’t JUST want our spirit. He wants our minds, emotions, and will. Jesus didn’t come to save us just to fix our spirit, he came to fix the WHOLE man. “He who the Son sets free is free indeed” Addiction, pornography, money, power, etc. All start in our soul, NOT THE SPIRIT.

See God loves our WHOLE body. Cry out to Him in worship because WE CAN DO NOTHING OF OURSELVES. We are useless without HIM. It’s because of HIM I live and because of HIM I die. We die daily to our sinful selves and take up our crosses to follow the Master who deserves Glory, Honor, Victory, and Power.

    Praise God.

Be Blessed ALL OF YOU!!! :)

  12. Thanks ETPW and Law for your suggestions. I will look into them.

Miriam, just want to thank you again for fearing God more than man and speaking the truth.

    Those who persevere are blessed.

    P.S.
I read a bit of your testimony about how when you were 18 God started speaking to you and showing you visions and calling you to prophesy/preach his word, and I thought it was cool because my testimony is very similar. I gave God my life when I was 18 and I am 22 now and I’ve grown so much in the last 4 years (especially the last 2). I wish I could talk to you!! I would ask you a 100 questions and get your advice about many things because I am a young minister and I know you have been through many things and learned a lot over the years walking with the Lord. Some people have a false idea about what humility is, but I know that you have a humble heart. I don’t think being humble means to go around with your head hanging and pray for 10 hrs a day…. Being humble means you look to God and say ‘yes’ when he asks you to speak his word and follow him — even when its hard — because you understand and know that you depend on him. And that’s what I see in you.

But I understand for privacy reasons you can’t give out your phone # Lol

    God bless,

  14. Jesus heals,
There is absolutely nothing wrong with emotions. It’s unnatural not to have emotions. We were created that way.Tears flow when we hear sad stories and we also express joy when there are good news. The Bible tells us that Jesus wept for Lazarus and angels rejoice when souls are saved. In worship our hearts express our joy and gratitude to God and sometimes we express this joy in tears. Music is merely an aid to help our heart express worship to God and your musical instruments can be anything. In poorer countries they may even use empty cans as musical instruments. But the one essential instrument of worship is our heart.

What we observe in many charismatic churches today is that worship tend to be music driven and performance oriented to the point it is no different from a rock concert. ‘Worshippers’ swing, sway and jump in a fleshly manner, again like those in a rock concert. Many of these actions are just mere sensual response to the music and yet they liken themselves to David. David dance but it was a spontaneous and worshipful heart response .True worship is one that can do without the music because it’s a heart thing( that’s where the music is ). It is purely Jesus driven and not just on Sundays but in our daily walk with Him.

A highly charged emotional ‘worship’ need not necessarily mean it’s annointed and a quiet worship does not mean God is not present. An emotionally charged worship can turn out to be deception as in the greatest deception in Australian church history by Mike G, when he sang his song ‘You are my Healer’.For along time he fake terminal desease and deceived the church and shockingly even the mighty prophets
in the church were deceived as well.

Jesus Heals, my advice is keep to the Living Word of God and listen to sermons from sound teachers and don’t run after experiences.

I dont run after experiences, experiences follow me. Just like the Gospel. Signs and wonders are accompanied by the Living Word. I just like to be an imitator of Christ like Paul said to be. I dont want to just read the Word of God and be dull and unchanged. I want to be a doer of the Word not just a hearer. I love the Word of God and His promises, I also like to fully live and “experience” what He has already provided. If you want to read the word of God, but not “experience” God’s promises then thats up to you. But why not speak the Words of the Creator over your life?? “As a man thinketh so is he”. If you think your poor and defeated, you will be poor and defeated. If you think your victorious through Christ Jesus, YOU WILL BE victorious through Christ Jesus. If you think ALL THINGS are possible for those who believe, then THEY WILL be possible to you. Its not “word of faith” its just speaking the words of the CREATOR, ABBA FATHER, into your life thats all.
What brings faith into your life?? Faith comes by HEARING, AND HEARING THE WORD OF GOD. So you SPEAK the word of GOD over your life.
Jer 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue; And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

See that. They that love it shall it the FRUIT thereof. IF YOU SPEAK things like “I’ll never get out of debt” Then you’ll eat that fruit. If you say “So and so will NEVER change” You’ll eat the fruit of your own words. You may think I’m going to extremes but if GOD said it well then that SETTLES it. Nothing else matters. It doesnt matter what people think, your friends or family think, what the circumstances look like, GOD’S WORD is ALWAYS TRUE. “Let God be TRUE and every man a LIAR.” You see I may lie and you may lie but GOD and what HE said in HIS word will NEVER lie.

I would say my favorite teacher of the Word of God was Smith Wigglesworth. If you have ever read any his books he had such a intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit. His goal everytime was to give Christ ALL the glory He rightly deserves. He says WE CAN DO NOTHING OF OURSELVES and we need the Holy Spirit. But at the same time he knew who he was in Christ Jesus. He knew the authority given to every believer. He understood and lived the victory of Calvary. I read in his books that the media and other “christians” would accuse him of being false because “well God doesn’t heal through people anymore.” Wigglesworth wasn’t perfect. He prayed for people who didn’t get healed. His own daughter was blind. He got gall stones that nearly killed him. But through it all, he kept compassionately praying for the sick. Just being a normal Christian, imitating Christ. I also remember reading that he read the Bible every chance he got, even when him and his wife were at the table eating, he would read the Bible. No wonder he was called the ‘apostle of faith’. Because the more time we study and meditate on the Bible the more our faith and trust in God builds. One last thing. Do you know what Wigglesworth did that many others ‘healing ministers’ didnt and dont do?? He actually prayed for people EVERYWHERE he went. He went to the store, BOOM he’d pray for them. He was on a train, he’d pray for them. You see healing isn’t just for the “big crowds”. ITS A LIFESTYLE, just like salvation.

    Be Blessed :)

  17. ~ Etpw, I have noticed that my generation (those in 20s) have struggled to understand our place in ministry.
Many of my friends feel they are called to some area of ministry like preaching, teaching, prophesying, etc. but they become confused/frustrated because it doesn’t turn out how they planned……some of them didn’t even get jobs or educations because they were “waiting” for their big chance to be sent somewhere. .

And I used to have that same mentality about ministry until God told me to look around, and see that the fields are white to harvest!! (meaning: there are people in my own town that need the Word and are ready to receive it)

I really want the Lord to use me for His glory and for a while when I was younger I let people puff me up with prophesies about how I was gonna do this or that..or how I had this anointing or that mantle… That almost ruined me because in my immaturity I started wanting glory for myself when I thought I wanted it for God.

I am crying now as I write this because God has been very patient with me and has shown so much mercy and loving kindness towards me by disciplining me so I would repent and mature.

Right now, at 22, I feel I am at a crossroads in my life. Although I have a blessed life, I still have that “unsatisfied” feeling in my heart.
Part of the reason I feel that way is because at my age we are supposed to get an education and career and settle down into our ‘life’. But I feel torn between pursuing an education/career and pursuing God.

As a result I know I have not been faithfully ministering the gifts of God and have become passive about serving at my church (I am a youth leader @ my church). I have one foot in, one foot out so to speak and I hesitate to completely step in to either side because I’m unsure of where the Lord wants my focus.

If I were to do what I desired, then I would hold off on finishing college, continue working full time at my minimum wage job, and devote myself to studying the word, prayer, and ministering at my church.
But that’s my desire..and I want what the Lord sees as best.

~ I welcome any advice that you or anyone else may have. Thank you for your time!

He caused the established church to become irate, jealous and vindicative. He caused a scene wherever he went. There were newsworthy happenings every time he said a word. His book is still available right now. His name? Jesus.

I’m gonna devote myself fully to the things of God right now because Jesus is coming back very soon and I don’t have time to waste being caught in limbo.

  24. Ok, but also don’t get into the trap that full time service is what you’re in limbo waiting for. Be all you can be now, whatever your circumstances, do what you know to be right and God’s will now (like the general will of God), and God will guide you into specifics if you should be in full time ministry, or go anywhere specific – he’ll maybe give you a specific Macedonian call when you’re already walking in the general will of God, he maybe won’t be specific – if not, don’t worry cos you’ll be doing the stuff anyway.

  25. Jesus Heals,

Thanks for your comments. You are obviously very earnest and hungry for God. Of course the ultimate choice of what to believe is for each of us to make.I am not unfamiliar with this ‘name it,claim it’ gospel, often referred to as ‘word of faith’ or word-faith teachings.I have once ’soaked up’ these teachings and and even taught a group directly from Kenneth Hagin ‘abundant life’ teachings. Not anymore, the truth has set me free from its clutches. Kenneth Hagin is regarded as the father of the modern charismatic movement and many teachings today are based on his wordfaith ideas. Based on research in his graduate work at Oral Roberts Universty, D,R McConnell provided documentary proofs that Kenneth Hagin plagiarised the works of another man called E.W.Kenyon.The significance of this is that Kenyon works was greatly influenced by heretical doctrines of faith theology of cults like religious science, christian science and the unity school of christianity.

Faith in God’s Word is simply just that, faith in God and His word, and not faith in your own ‘faith’.It’s a simple childlike trust in God’s Word and only God will bring it to pass in His time according to His divine and sovereign will. The repeating of positive confession, claiming and visualisation is not faith in God but faith in your own faith and effort, and in the power of your thoughts, in an attempt to harness the power of positive thinking and the mind to bring to fruition what we think in our minds.

The bible verse ‘As a man thinks, so is he’, Pr 23: 7 does not refer to the power of positive thinking, not about if you think poor you will be poor or if you think rich you will be rich. It’s about the mindset of a person whether evil or good. A renewed mind in Christ by His Word builds a Christlike mindset leading to a Christlike life, and evil mindset leads to evil and sinful living.

‘So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ’, Ro 10: 17. Again this is not about ’speaking?’ the word of God over you. Here it is about the need for a clear presentation of the gospel message to precede saving faith. The word ‘So’ at the beginning of the verse means this verse is linked to the verses preceding it, where the verses raised the questions concerning how the lost will believe if they have not heard the gospel, and how will they hear without a preacher. Generally ,the word of God guides us and the Holy Spirit empowers us in our daily walk with Him.

There are dangers in seeking experiences as pointed by David Wilkerson who even warned about the infiltration of witches and false teachers in churches today, especially charismatic ones. There was a group I know of, who were into ’soaking prayer’ where you get plenty of ‘feeligs’ and mystical experiences but abandoned it after learning of the dangers and its link to new age and eastern religions.

I believe God still heals sovereignly today but not the wordfaith way.I beleive God is sovereign and can bring spiritual experiences to the faithful as He chooses. But I will not deliberately seek an experience especially not the NAR kind and open myself to deception. The greatest experience is still experiencing His faithfulness in our daily walk with Him.And the greatest miracle is still in the salvation of souls and changed lives.

Lol, you know that is exactly what the lord told me about a year ago? And since he showed me that I determined to live my life in that manner. But it seems that lately for some reason I have struggled with feeling torn.

As I was writting this comment the Lord began to speak to me. And He told me that His grace was sufficient for me, and that he would give me the ability and strength to “balance” every thing in my life. Its like He showed me a picture of a juggler — and more and more balls were being added into his hands for him to juggle. But instead of dropping them, somehow he was able to juggle them all.

Thank you for confirming and reminding me of what the Lord had shown me earlier this year. I feel much more peace in my heart about everything.

Could I ask you one more thing?..

At my job I work with all unsaved people (which is like a dream come true to me) and many times my co workers come to me asking about God, or telling me they want to get their life right with Him. I can tell they’re reaching out for God and searching for Him and it opens a door for me to share the gospel with them.

I wanted to know if you would pray for a boy named Aaron (26) and Brent (18). These are 2 of my co workers and God is drawing both of their hearts to Jesus.

Would anyone else that reads this post please pray for them?

    Thank you so much! And
    God Bless you all!

It sounds as though you are already right in the centre of Gods purpose for you. How else could Jesus be seen where you work but through you. The work of being His witness is the greatest of all works I believe. ‘Walking the walk’ as well as ‘talking the talk’ is the hardest thing to maintain, and you are clearly doing this for your co-workers to be noticing. Aaron and Brent will become names that I will add to my prayer requests each day.

The gift of PEACE is the greatest gift of God because with peace we can face anything that befalls us, without peace there is turmoil.

So may HIS peace be yours and HIS praise be continually in your mouth. HE IS WORTHY.

  30. I personally enjoy Hillsong’s music very much. I have heard Pastor Brian preach, but of course since I don’t live in Australia, I have heard the short versions of his sermons, and I really don’t know how much of the above is actual truth or opinion, which according to my sister everyone always seems to have one of those. I do listen quite often to Pastor Prince and have grown tremendously by focusing on glorifying Jesus and getting my eyes off of myself, which has turned out to be pretty cool. Calling Hillsong a cult, I don’t think I would go any further with that than I would with the local religious churches all around. All of them get testy if you don’t agree and all of them don’t either want to have what they said confronted or my personal favorite, no negative comments allowed. I personally spend more time in the scriptures and wait for the Holy Spirit to teach me as Jesus promised He would, which He does and I have learned so much and every once in a while one of these guys have something great to share. At those times, I listen. That’s my take on it all.

DovesEyes: I am glad your pursuing the call on your life. You go. On the waiting front, there is a course to a song I love by John Waller “While I’m waiting, I will serve you while I’m waiting; I will worship while I’m waiting, I will not faint. I’ll be running the race, even while I wait”. Keep running and I look forward to reading wonderful exploits that Abba Father and our Lord Jesus Christ takes you on.

May the mercy and loving kindness of God overtake each one that reads this blessing. Amen.

  32. Wendy,
Thanks for your comments, good thing I read them today, otherwise it will be another 2 weeks before I check the blog again. My comments were made from my experiences and from what I see, hear and read.Instead of commenting on each point that you disagree with me and point to scripture, you chose to question my qualification to express my views and call me a pharisee or have a pharisee spirit. Claiming someone to have a pharisee spirit is a common retort of charismatic leaders when they are criticised.Other common retort aimed at putting fear into someone will be ‘judge not’ and ‘touch not the annointed’. You assume I lacked the ‘experience’and should therefore not comment, and you presumed yourself to have the ability to read the inside of a person and therefore boldly and presumptuously declare that I must surely be a sad and troubled soul.’Your word of knowledge’ is way off the mark.I do not think it’s necessary to explain to you my background but this I must tell you, and that is had it not been for Jesus being my God and Saviour,my life would have been meaningless and miserable. He has made my life complete and grant me the peace and joy of living. I thank Him who has blessed me and my family in numerous ways according to his plan and purposes for us. I am quite sure He has blessed you and your family too.I would not dare to presume otherwise.

How am I a pharisee if I believe in Calvary and God’s grace and not the letter of the laws and human works for the salvation of souls ? How am I a pharisee if I don’t regard myself more righteous than my brother but rather regard myself as the least of least.Does standing up for the gospel that Jesus and the apostles taught and speaking up against another gospel make me legalistic and a pharisee.
Let God and His word be the Judge.

Theres no question why Im smiling
You buy a piece of paradise
You buy a piece of me

Ill get you everything you wanted
Ill get you everything you need
Dont need to believe in hereafter
    Just believe in me

    Cos jesus he knows me
    And he knows Im right
Ive been talking to jesus all my life
    Oh yes he knows me
    And he knows Im right
    And hes been telling me
    Everything is alright

    I believe in the family
With my ever loving wife beside me
But she dont know about my girlfriend
Or the man I met last night

    Do you believe in god
    Cos thats what Im selling
And if you wanna get to heaven
    Ill see you right

You wont even have to leave your house
    Or get outta your chair
You dont even have to touch that dial
    Cos Im everywhere

    And jesus he knows me
    And he knows Im right
Ive been talking to jesus all my life
    Oh yes he knows me
    And he knows Im right
    Well hes been telling me
    Everythings gonna be alright

Wont find me practising what Im preaching
Wont find me making no sacrifice
But I can get you a pocketful of miracles
If you promise to be good, try to be nice
God will take good care of you
Just do as I say, dont do as I do

    Im counting my blessings,
    Ive found true happiness
Cos Im getting richer, day by day
You can find me in the phone book,
Just call my toll free number
You can do it anyway you want
    Just do it right away

Therell be no doubt in your mind
    Youll believe everything Im saying
If you wanna get closer to him
Get on your knees and start paying

    Cos jesus he knows me
    And he knows Im right
Ive been talking to jesus all my life
    Oh yes he knows me
    And he knows Im right
    Well hes been telling me
    Everythings gonna be alright, alright

    Jesus he knows me
Jesus he knows me, you know…

    Phil Collins you’re a genius!!!
