Christian prophecy for the church and for the nations from a servant of God called to speak God's word

Robert Schuller taps his daughter to lead ministry’s grand comeback

Article by Dana Parsons, June 23 2009 La Times

“Sheila Schuller Coleman, the eldest child of Crystal Cathedral founder Robert Schuller, has directed the church’s Family Ministries for years. She says she looks forward to speaking from the pulpit about once every four to six weeks.

Sheila Schuller Coleman, who has worked in the church for decades, will deliver occasional sermons and be the driving force behind Crystal Cathedral operations, including the ‘Hour of Power’ TV show.

She remembers being about 4 and, as her father worked in his study that doubled as a bedroom, hearing a knock on the front door. She answered and a tearful woman said, “Is the pastor here?”

It was one of Sheila Schuller’s first realizations that their small house in Garden Grove was also a sanctuary. In the years that followed, long before Robert Schuller would become an iconic religious figure with a worldwide audience, she came to see her father as “just the local pastor down the street,” someone whose job it was to preach on Sundays and help ease people’s problems.

The little girl is now 58, married and the mother of four. Her father is 82, white-haired and slowed, but mounting a comeback.

And in ways that she never imagined until recently, Sheila Schuller Coleman — not her younger brother and former heir apparent — will be the one “to help my dad finish strong.”

Earlier this month, Schuller anointed his eldest daughter as the church’s co-leader and the person who would carry the Crystal Cathedral’s banner into the future. The announcement capped a tumultuous year for the Schullers and their admirers, as a father-son split over “a lack of shared vision” led the younger Robert Schuller to surrender his senior pastor status and leave the church after his father stripped him of his role in the TV ministry.

The elder Schuller is among the most influential American preachers of the last half-century, having written bestselling books and converted a small, local ministry into one that broadcasts the “Hour of Power” worldwide from the gleaming Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove.

But the ministry has fallen on hard times. Hurt by the economy and, perhaps, changing viewer tastes, church attendance and TV viewership have declined. Schuller, who handed his son the reins in 2006, told the congregation this month that he will return to a prominent role and put in two more years. But in the future, he said, it will be his daughter “who’s making this church, not the preacher.”

That may sound daunting, but Coleman does not feel overmatched. “I guess it should be a scary time. Call it naivete, but I don’t feel it. I actually have a strong sense of anticipation. I’m very excited about what we can do.”

Details on her new role are yet to come, but it’s clear the church’s board believes it needs Schuller back at the helm — at least for now when fundraising is suffering. He remains the storied, titanic figure behind the church, which traces its inception to a drive-in theater lot in 1955.

If those were carefree days, these are not. Shadowing everything at the cathedral, spoken or not, is a family squabble that would rival that of any prime-time TV series.

“The mistake I felt we made as a family — and it was done out of love — was that we tried to pour all our seeds into one bucket,” Coleman says of her brother’s ascension. “God wanted the seeds to be disseminated and scattered so the kingdom could grow.”

She says the entire family laments the internal friction, which is primarily between father and son. “My dad was very hurt, and Robert was very hurt. The healing will take time. I see signs it’s beginning to happen. The thing that was so hard for me and the family is that so many people in the church and our viewers and the public who saw us as the model family, said, ‘Wow, oh no.’ For some reason, they didn’t think it would happen to us.”

Robert was the only son among Robert and Arvella Schuller’s five children. He and a business partner recently announced that their company has bought AmericanLife TV Network and hopes to make the station “the destination for family values.”

Through a spokeswoman, the younger Schuller said his schedule didn’t allow time to be interviewed, but in a written statement he wished his sister well. “I have great respect for the work she does at the ministry and as an educator and believe she will add tremendous value in her new position.”

Coleman has a doctorate in educational administration and leadership. She’s been on the church staff since 1973, except for a four-year stint as a public school teacher in Fullerton. She has been directing the church’s Family Ministries, and now will also serve as an occasional preacher.

“I know it’s going to sound very different,” she says, “but I believe my role is to mother this ministry. Which means to nurture the congregation, the staff.”

She’s looking forward to speaking from the pulpit (maybe once every four to six weeks) but says her sermons won’t sound like those of a preacher. “My messages will be very light on Scripture. They’ll be stories, primarily, with lessons. They’ll be biblical concepts, but my platform on the ‘Hour of Power’ and the cathedral on Sunday mornings is as an outreach to the unchurched.”

Poised to become the public face of the ministry, Coleman laughs easily and acknowledges having had a bout with religious skepticism as a college student. The doubt is behind her, but she still says that faith is fraught with illogic.

“I tried to make it logical,” she said of that period. “When you’re a science major, everything is why, why, why? And every time I’d ask why, I could come up with a logical explanation but then I’d right away come up with another why. Finally, I realized I just needed to take a leap of faith. I know it sounds trite, but it’s just a leap of faith. I just said, ‘Lord, I don’t know that I can understand this, I can’t explain it all, but I’m choosing to believe in you.’ The minute I did that, everything fell into place.”

“I’ve always had a very close relationship with Jesus Christ, since I was a little girl,” Coleman says. That faith “has deepened over the years, and in the last year or so I can’t even describe to you how amazing it’s been.”

The church’s leaders need faith these days. TV ratings are down 50% from their heyday and the church is selling properties to pay a $50-million debt.

Coleman chuckles at the notion that the cathedral’s time has passed. “Faith is believing in something even though you can’t see it, even though it goes against reason,” she says. “That’s my faith, and I do believe we have our best days yet to come.”

It may have been the fates as much as family dynamics that lined up against the younger Schuller, says the head of an association of religious researchers. As with any organization that relies on donations, the economic downturn has made the cathedral vulnerable, says William Swatos Jr., executive officer of the Religious Research Assn. and editor of the “Encyclopedia of Religion and Society.”

“Passing the torch in these situations is often difficult,” Swatos says, “because when you look at these movements — religious among them — there isn’t necessarily an inheritance factor that operates strongly. In many cases the footsteps . . . may be harder to follow when you’re the son than when you’re an outsider because people are expecting almost a duplication. If you brought in someone everyone knows isn’t the son, you begin with a kind of clean slate.”

Coleman agrees, saying her brother may have been in a no-win situation.

While the family tries to heal, the Crystal Cathedral must ramp up its efforts, Coleman says. The plan is to hire an evangelist to lure non-churchgoers and to improve marketing of the “Hour of Power.”

In a way that’s both simple and far-reaching, the Crystal Cathedral is going back to basics.

“I believe in a big God who’s not done with this ministry and not done with my father,” Coleman says. “Dad still has amazing dreams and visions. He’s still the visionary of this church, and he will be as long as he draws breath.”

  1. Robert H. Schuller, the founder of the Crystal Cathedral, will turn over his leadership role at the 10,000-member megachurch to his oldest daughter, a church spokesperson said Wednesday.

Schuller, 82, announced during last Sunday’s service that Sheila Schuller Coleman, 58, will assume leadership of the entire ministry, effective immediately.

Coleman will also appear on the weekly televangelist show “The Hour of Power” every Sunday, but it hasn’t been decided how much she will preach, said church spokesperson Mike Nason.

David and Barbara Cerullo’s lifestyle is one of opulence. Their south Charlotte home is valued at more than $1.6 million. But the home pales in comparison to their lakefront home near Greenville, South Carolina. The price tag for the home on Lake Keowee is $3.1 million. It appears they’ve spared no expense with custom woodwork, expansive rock walls, and a boat dock.

  7. I have to just compare the rich and the poor. (An example.) The rich have a 3.1 million dollar home and have need of nothing. All their comforts, food, cars, clothes, trips, vacations, parties, banquets, jewelry, gold and silver in abundance. A ‘gated community’, perhaps? Add to that, a horse stable, a yacht and a private plane or two. Oh, yes, also the very BEST medical care is at their beck and call. NICE, eh? Now, the poor. Little or no food. Starving at times. Few or no clothes. Never well-dressed. Huts, hovels or tents for homes. No air-conditioning. No gates, no garages, no pools, no stables. (They may live IN the stable. Sound familiar?) The poor have no thought, no conception of a banquet, a feast, a fancy vacation. Survival and relief is on their minds. As for safety, no body guards here. No security. Nothing to stop attackers. (Except angels from God.) No doctors in sight. No insurance. No medicine. Suffering, pain, misery, fear, despair is their everyday life. No opulent mansions. No personal assistants. No world-wide ministries. No banquet of delicacies. ( Maybe a bit of stale bread…and a sip of water.)

    Subject: religious financial fraud

Tonight I got the International Bulletin of Missionary Research Jan.2009 edition.

The researchers that publish the World Christian Encyclopedia have estimated that $27 billion will be embezzled by Christian religious leaders in 2009. A year ago they estimated that $25 billion would be embezzled in 2008. So that is an increase in fraud by $2 billion in one year.

According to their report, $70 million is embezzled daily.

The report estimates that this fraud will continue to increase and in 2025 A.D. $65 billion will be embezzled.

  10. Schuller daughter aims to heal Crystal Cathedral
By GILLIAN FLACCUS – Associated Press Writer

The church and its internationally known telecast have been bleeding dollars and members for years – a trend that accelerated last fall when the cathedral’s heir apparent, the Rev. Robert A. Schuller Jr., suddenly left in a bitter family feud.

  11. I don’t mind if Christians are rich…, as long as they work hard and earn their money honestly. But I think it is a problem when Christians are getting rich by promising people wealth from the Word of God under the condition that you give money to THEIR ministry. This is called a seed of faith. Instead of using the money to radiate Jesus Christ, they radiate themselves and are using the believer’s money for their own lavish lifestyle with the argument:”The servant is worth the wage”. Jesus taught us to be content with what we have. It is so contradicted to the Word of God. Some US Christians who are living a Hollywood Star lifestyle and US christians who are threatened to live on the streets because their homes are foreclosed and still these people are targeted and urged to give money to a Rich Man Ministry!?! Thank you Jesus for Your encouragement in Matthew 5:3.

  12. justavoice,

    P.S. Shame on the rich.

lol. There’s a difference in between being rich and being greedy. There’s nothing wrong with being rich. The issue of money is very misuderstood to many christians. Many Christians think being poor is being humble and not thinking of ourselves. They percieve being poor as being more closer to God than the wealthy. One of the greatest revivalists Johnathan Wesley was one of the richest men in his day. I bet thats a surprise. Just because Jesus told his disciple that its hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom doesn’t mean that money is evil. Money can be good or evil. It just depends what we do with it. If we spend it all on ourselves then yes its called greed. But if you freely give to the poor and people in need then you’re called blessed. There’s a difference. If I’m a real estate investor and I make $500,000 a year and I buy a house I can afford that I worked for, does that make me evil? Absolutely not! Its just called using my God given gifts, thoughts, and talents to create money for the Kingdom, myself, and to help others who are in need. Just because there are some materialistic preachers who preach the prosperity gospel doesn’t mean that wealth is “bad”. You say shame on the rich, but why? What did the rich do? You should’ve said shame on the GREEDY. Jesus isn’t against money, wealth, or rich people. He’s against people that have something and do NOTHING. If you’re making $20,000 and you keep it all to yourself, thats greed. If you make $10,000,000 and keep it to yourself its called greed. You dont have to be wealthy or rich to be greedy. Money is a very very big issue in Christianity and the world. Did you know that 80% of divorces are due to some sort of financial problems? Thats pretty sad actually. We should never put money before our marriage. If you want to work 50-60 hours a week making very little money and spending time away from your family then thats fine. But God gives everyone creative thoughts, ideas, and ways to think and do things differently. Its just up to us and our determination of what God wants us to go. You said the rich have 3.1 million dollar houses. If a person can afford a 3.1 million dollar house is that wrong? I mean its better to buy a 3.1 million dollar house if you can afford it, than to buy a $180,000 you can’t afford right? Alot of people look at Pat Robertson and says “well he’s rich”. Yes, and he worked hard and SMART and deserves to be rich. He owns his own business and is an investor. What’s so wrong about fulfilling your calling and getting financially blessed? Do we spend all day at work just to come home eat, sleep, and pay a mortgage? Of course not you spend money on yourself, give some away, and save some. The only real difference between the rich and the poor is their mental attitude. The rich can fall, lose all their money and gain it back. The poor will always have excuses as to why their always poor. The rich will work smarter and have money work for them. The poor will work for money.
Anyone, Christians included can make money in any type of economic downturn, depression, or collapse. This is especially true for Christians because we have God on our side. I’m not saying we all NEED to be rich. I’m just making my case that God doesn’t hate money, the rich, the poor, or the wealthy. You can be poor and be greedy at the same time.

    P.S. Shame on the greedy!!!

  13. Brad,

That article is truly sad. Do you realize how much of an impact that would have on the world for Christ, if it went to the right place and the right mission field rather than “our churches” and the people themselves? Like I said in my previous post its not fraud if the pastors would just give it to people in need and not induldge themselves with it. If a pastor makes any amount of money and keeps it to himself, he shouldn’t be preaching at all. We need to practice what we preach. If we preach about tithing and blessing others, but yet keep it to ourselves we become greedy hypocrites. These pastors who don’t give what they have are like sheep in wolves clothing. On the outside they have an appearance of a godly person but on the inside their burning with their own lustful desires.

  14. TO “J.H.” …Did not God say that the poor of the world are rich in faith? Did He not say to help the poor, the afflicted, the needy, the fatherless?******* Did He not say that a rich man will hardly enter Heaven? Didn’t He say woe to those with riches?******* Didn’t He say that if you see someone cold, hungry, naked and in need, and you just walk away and ignore them and say bless you, that you are wrong?******* Didn’t He give the example of helping the wounded, with the good samaritan? Didn’t He say that what we do for the least of these, is what we actually do as unto Him,too? ******* And, has He not chosen the POOR of this world to be RICH in FAITH?(James 2:5a)******* And, didn’t He also show that the rich men oppress and exploit the poor for their own greedy and malicious gain?******* And, did not the scripture teach that we should not have respect/unfair deference to the rich with the fine apparel and then neglect and shun the poor beggar?******* And, didn’t He say that it is wrong to be at ease, in luxury and living in wanton pleasure?******* Didn’t He say that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, then for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven?******* Didn’t He say that we cannot love mammon/money? Didn’t He say that the LOVE of MONEY is the root of ALL EVIL?******* Didn’t He say that he resists the proud? Didn’t He say that He chooses the weak things of the world to confound the mighty?*******Didn’t He tell the rich young ruler to sell all he had, and give unto the poor? ******* ARE WE READING THE SAME BIBLE???????

  15. *******And, oh yes, indeed it would be nice IF the rich would help the poor. Many do, but many more DO NOT. They could care less. Their eyes are only on THEIR lives, ministries, families, homes, planes, riches in excess. In a perfect world, the rich would do as God has said, but we are in the last days of a greedy, evil, sin-filled, selfish, materialistic world. So, it is NOT wrong to ‘be rich’ and to ‘work hard and obtain wealth’. Of course not, BUT…more often than not, the rich become proud, arrogant, selfishly motivated, greedy as hell, controlling, power-hungry, diabolical, exploitative, hard-hearted, lukewarm to Christ, lovers of money more than God and the poor, self-sufficient(they think),totally deceived and given over to their riches/deception… by God. It is better to save your soul than to obtain the entire world and it’s wealth. I think I read this ’somewhere’: “For what shall it profit man if he gain the whole world and LOSE HIS SOUL?” (Mark 8:36)

  16. *******A few more scriptures to think about: “Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered: and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. (and) You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton: ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.” From James 5:1-3,5 ******* And, here is the NIV version: “Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the missery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. (and) You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.” James 5:1-4,5 ******* Then, there’s the example of the rich man and the beggar Lazarus. Guess which one went to Heaven? (Hint: It wasn’t the rich man.)

Tell all those starving to death that they have a ‘bad attitude’. And, go tell all the poor folks in the slums, ghettos and projects. They’d ‘love’ to hear that idea. (Not.)

  18. “The only difference between the rich and the poor is their mental attitude.”

In America, where their is a CHOICE for EVERY person, yes it is their mental attitude. IF it’s a poor country and the people can’t do nothing because their government oppresses them then they have no choice. So sorry you misunderstood me that when their is a CHOICE for EVERYONE to be wealthy, it is the mental attitude.

I hope you realize their are just as many verses on the wealthy as their are the poor.

Deuteronomy 8:17-18-”My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” :18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the Ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

1 Chr 29:12 Wealth and honor come from you (God); you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

Eccles 5:19 Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work– this is a gift of God.

Isaiah 45:3 I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.

Jer 29:7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you to will prosper.”

Proverbs 22:4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honour and life.

Proverbs 11:25 A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

Proverbs 10:22 When the LORD blesses you with riches, you have nothing to regret.

Proverbs 13:21 Misfortune pursues the sinner, but prosperity is the reward of the righteous.

Psalm 35:27 Let those who favour my righteous cause and have pleasure in my uprightness shout for joy and be glad and say continually, ‘Let the Lord be magnified, Who takes pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.’ (* Wow God takes pleasure in the prosperity of his servant)

Joshua 1:7-8 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Proverbs 3:9-10 Honour the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.

Proverbs 14:21 It’s wrong to hate others, but God blesses everyone who is kind to the poor.

Proverbs 22:9 Generous hands are blessed hands because they give bread to the poor.

Proverbs 28:27 He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.

Proverbs 11:24 One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.

  19. In general, you could argue that we all have a choice and we all are created equal, etc. But, in reality, few escape the caste (social position) they are born into. If you are one of the blessed, fortunate, “lucky ones” and have a family or upbringing with a good work ethic and character with integrity, then you have a much greater chance of becoming wealthy. On the other hand, if your family line is cursed, (and) unfortunate; an “unlucky one” and have a dysfunctional, broken family then your odds are less optimistic. There are exceptions to this unspoken ‘rule’… but it (still is) obviously true.

    Comment by justavoice | June 30, 2009

  20. In other words, if you happen to be from the ‘blessed, righteous, prosperous’ side of life, then you will inherit the wealth, the work ethic, the connections, the good name, the respect, the status, the control, the power, etc. But, if you are born into the ‘cursed, unsuccessful, poor’ side of society, then you will fight your entire life to get out of it. You will battle poverty, lack of character, a tarnished family name, obtaining respect and self esteem and attempting to realize the ‘good life’ that others just are automatically born and bred into. It is possible with the favor, mercy, freedom and love of God, but it is yet a fight for the ages.

  21. And I see few of the prosperous, successful, influential, powerful Christians actually humbling themselves and ‘getting their hands dirty’ to consistantly, effectively, compassionately help those from ‘the wrong side of the tracks’. (Yes, some do and they are awesome and to be commended, but many more do not. They are too busy enjoying their manifold blessings.)

I agree most people keep their money to themselves and dont do a thing to help the poor. I also believe that people from wealthy families have a better chance at being wealthy than people raised in poor families. But I also believe that many people who were raised poor absolutely got sick and tired of living that lifestyle. They knew there was a way out of poverty and they were determined to get out of poverty. A person coming from a poor family will work harder and be more determined than the person coming from the rich family. They’re determined to risk it all for they have nothing to lose in the first place. Many times in life the greatest risk leads to the greatest success. A life filled with risks is way better than a passive life and doing nothing at all. Its better to try something and fail than to never try it at all because of fear of failure. You learn from your actions and experience, not your thoughts. When you come to the end of your life you won’t think of the thoughts you thought, but you will think of the accomplishments, failures, risks, successes, and maybe regretting not doing some things. One of the worst things in life would be to look back on your life and regret not following your dreams due to fear.

Dean Graziosi is a really good real estate investor/mentor. I dont know if he is a christian but he shows whoever wants to learn, the poor and the rich, the ins and outs of real estate and coaches them.

If you study the life of the wealthy 95-98% invested in real estate. Not that being wealthy is my number one priority, because its not. My priority is God and my family. But if God has given me, (a middle class person), a chance to obtain wealth to help the poor, advance the Kingdom of God, and provide for my family then I’m going to do that.

“Assuredly you brought nothing into the world, and assuredly you can’t take anything out”.

Another Christian who absolutely blesses the poor is Robert Morris, a pastor and author of “The Blessed Life”. In his lifetime God has blessed him financially and when God spoke to give something away to someone he gave it away. I believe he gave away like 11 cars and 5 houses for free all because God told him to. Now that is what wealth is for, getting blessed to bless others. Using your God given resources and talents to make an impact on those around. Thats what its all about, Changing Lives.

  26. My Wife and I know and love Robert Anthony Schuller Jr, we were members of his little church before becoming senior Pastor. The Church is a Hospital for Sinners, who of all the people dares throw the first Stone?? or point at the stick in anothers eye. Even you Dr Schuller Sr
