  1. Ha! That is awesome in a “totally dorky Christian pun” sort of way. If I were totally dork I’d get one and take it to the next mass on the mountain, but being only mostly dork (and preferring mag lights) I’ll refrain…maybe.

PS. I like the new style, but the top banner is wrapping a bit soon so that “Christian Blog” is hidden behind the posts.

  2. This is indeed quite a shallow and pedantic use of the word of God.

  3. My all-time favorite piece of religious rubbish: the Mizpah Coin. Two interlocking pendants with hearts on them, inscribed with the allegedly “romantic” message of Genesis 31:49: “The LORD watch between me and thee, while we are absent one from the other.” Keep one half and give the other half to your sweetheart — awww, how adorable.

Problem is, all you have to do is read the whole chapter (or even just verse 50) to know that this is not a feel-good “togetherness” verse about a male/female relationship, but rather a reminder of the Lord’s omniscience and a WARNING between two men against treachery. Verse 50 (NKJ), Laban speaking to Jacob: “If you afflict my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us — see, God is witness between you and me!”.

  4. And, courtesy of the local Lifeway Christian Bookstore, here’s the example I found most distasteful (pun not intended): His Praise Is Ever On My Lips lip gloss.

  5. It is so good to have you back! I hope you are recovering well.

Check out “Rapture Ready” by Daniel Radosh. This book takes a hysterically funny journey into Christian marketing that’s also very revealing — and very sad, in some places. Just a Bill, thanks for the info on the lip gloss. It’s a perfect example.

I think the church today spends much more time — and money — on marketing Jesus than preaching the gospel.

  6. Wow, a lip gloss that is the quintessential essence of His Praise!

Who would have ever thought that anyone could capture God’s praise and put it in a lip gloss?

    Amazing. LOL.

  7. What’s next, soap that has a scripture etched on/in it that says “He washed my sins away”?

  8. During this time of financial frugality one might want to consider purchasing a Revival Calander from Bethel Ministries. It is designed to help build your faith and is (seeing as we are in October) available at a grace busting half-price. I was wondering if Toronto and Lakeland were featured but couldn’t be bothered to search.

Talking of Lakeland, Mr Bentley (as I think is documented elsewhere on this site) is still trying to shift his hand-signed open heavens signature series bibles. But do hurry (as was heralded months ago) because there are only 1000 specially numbered copies for sale. These bibles contain hundreds of Todd Bentley teachings and are available in a rather fetching ‘outer darkness’ black for only $225.

  9. I think the Christian bookstore used to sell “Testa-mints”.

  10. Pathetic but still 100% christian!

    Comment by Geoffrey | October 12, 2009

  11. Oh yeah, I forgot about Testa-mints; I think it was a Heaven & Earth store where I saw those.

You know, the more junk like this I see in Christian bookstores, the more I think I should buy as much faith-releavant material — the stuff that is of true value — as I can from Target, Wal-mart, Costco, and the likes. At least in that case, I’m helping send a message to the big retailers that these materials have value and there is a market for them.

  12. Still 100% Christian? Puhleeze.

Christian means Christ-like. Taking scriptures out of context is hardly Christ-like. Jesus Christ never took scriptures out of context.

  13. They should make a very strong flashlight that displays an image of Jesus.
Then when I get in trouble I’ll shine it on a cloud, and He’ll come quickly to help me.

  14. Christian represents a religious system in North America rather than Christ Likeness.

I go to this church and i also do house church.
victory has balanced teaching even though i don’t always agree on everything. they mention tithing and 100 fold return at offering time but that’s about it. no weird animal sounds at this this church, one time during a time when billy joe called for testimonies a woman started shaking as if the power of God was zapping her and billy joe turned to her and said stop it and she stopped shaking.

  16. How funny. Flashlights like these are being sold on TV.

    Comment by Aaron | October 13, 2009

  17. I have just recognised the top torch. Its one of those that you shake and it charges itself. I bought one a couple of years ago. Lasted six months, stopped working, no matter how much I shaked it and it refused to light up. In the end it went in the BIN, So much for walking in the light with this thing. It left me in the darkness when I needed it most. The true light never leaves you or forsakes you but the false will always disapoint and leave you stumbling in the dark.

  18. Since when does Christian not mean Christ-like? Some may try to say that it means religious sytem, but that does not make it so. The Bible (Acts 11:26, 26:28, 1 Peter 4:16) says that Christian means Christ-like, NOT religious system.

    Comment by Ray | October 20, 2009

  19. Yes, many of these items are gimmicky and produced by nonchristians simply for the money.

However, do you all feel the same thing about Christian t-shirts and jewelry? My husband and I own a screenprinting business and plan on selling t-shirts with bible verses on them. Maybe I’m wrong to consider this a ministry. I’m just so tired of seeing all the horrible messages on t-shirts out there. I tried to buy a t-shirt at Target the other day for my son and only a handful DID NOT have skulls or peace signs on them.

So, I don’t see anything wrong with selling a Christian alternative to all those horrible messages out there.

Also, I know from experience that wearing an item with a Christian message on it can open up the opportunity to talk to someone about Christ.

Finally, regarding some of the more “gimmicky” promotional items such as mugs, flashlights, etc. I have a favorite mug with a bible verse on it that encourages me everytime I read it. And what’s so wrong with a flashlight that reminds someone to be the light of the World?

I sincerely want to glorify God in all that I do. I don’t think selling t-shirts or other products with Christian verses and themes is perverting the word. If you disagree with me I would like to hear why, because I truly do not want to offend my Lord. I would give away these t-shirts if I had the money, but I don’t.

Is there a place for proclaiming the Word outside of the context of the Bible? What about artwork with a bible verse on it?

I really want to hear other opinions about this. Is this just a matter of taste? or is selling these products sinful?
    Please, please comment

  20. One final thought. Christian teens and children are no longer allowed to express their faith in the public schools. Wouldn’t it be better for them to wear a t-shirt proclaiming their faith then the popular ones with skulls, rock star motifs and and peace signs?
